Recommended pickups for Vh4

Duncan JB bridge and a PAF in the neck. The VH4 I always found works best with bridge pick ups in the 12K range. As you say, it certainly does not need to be driven by a over the top pick up.

I'm not a fan of JB's usually. They've got a sort of high end cut that isn't pleasing to my ears. The best thing to do is use seymour's chart and see which ones suite your guitar's woods and what-not. I personally prefer the duncan distortion or my new favorite is the custom-custom.

What do you pair the H2+ up with in the neck?

H1- was recommended to me and that's what i've done in two guitars, seems fairly balanced for output from neck to bridge, maybe just little less hot on the neck. suppose and H1 would pair nice also, and be hotter.

Was meaning to try these out and keep forgetting to order. May grab a couple sets.

Poppa told me way back in 99', he prefers low output pickups. They make the amp work for it's money.
I tend to not go over 9K for clarity.

I use a Duncan Jazz on the neck and a Distortion on the bridge of my SG. They both work pretty good with my VH4, but the Distortion is still pretty hot. Sometimes I think about tryin' the JB but at this point I'm accustomed to that sound, so I always give up in the end :D

then I suggest the one "in between" JB and Distortion - the Duncan Custom..awesome for metal or hard rock, yet it does not have very hot output like the Distortion does.
slightly more bass and tighter mids than JB.
I replaced the JB in my SL2H for a Custom, very pleased
I don't own a VH4 (yet), but perfect with other amps I use it with including my Herbie.
If you have a "dark" guitar like mahogany, then perhaps the Custom Custom fits better.

best of luck,

You mean THIS one right?
Seems really interesting...listening to the samples I can hear a lot of similarities with the Distortion, but a little less output and tamed highs that could work really good for me (I'm a bit on the dark side when it comes to distorted tones while the Distortion pickup retains some of that sparkle, I guess to cut through the mix a little better during leads).

well, my SG is mahogany but surely not as dark as a Les Paul...I guess those tamed highs of the Custom Custom could work pretty good for me. Thanks a lot for the advice man!!!

Hey, I was recommending the custom-custom earlier in the thread! Anyways... The highs on the custom-custom are much much sweeter than the other pickups I tried. They're that fizzy recording sweet. I don't know how to explain it. They're very present, yet very pleasant. Maybe it's because they're tapered off. If you have a particularly dark guitar you might want to look at a custom as it has more high end punch.

REZ: Seymour Duncan makes a lot of their humbuckers in 7 string versions including the 59 and the custom/custom-custom etc..

Also, I agree with Mark2c. I have some low output p90s that make my diezels sing.

Bingo. Although I have some hefty output pups, the best sounding pups are my stock Gibby's and my Riff Raffs, and eve those have some balls

I just figure if a JB works for Adam, it will work for me. The objective, if you have configuration choices - something a little more tame that doesn't fall apart will work best for you. EMG actives, believe it or not, work very well with the VH4.

Exactly what I was thinking, now who carries that in a 7 string? which model?

These cats, unfortunately the price ain't lowballin'... They are BKPs to say the least. But check these out - excellent ratings, perfect outputs, and a lot of quality... Hey, you've got a pimp amp, drive it with a pimp set of pups :D
