The fan on this thing has always made noise intermittently, but it would usually go away. It has recently become constant and makes the amp unusable due to excessive noise issues. It sounds like a loud grinding noise. Is the fan necessary?

It is. Search the forum. A lot of people have upgraded it with a quieter fan. I think you can even get something from Egnater.

Did you find my post on replacing the fan....

Dead easy to do. I put a fan control on mine to stop the fan noise, seems silly but the noise is back pressure due to its placement and not being fed enough air for it's output. When you reduce the speed of the fan a little and equalize the input and output you get the same cooling but without the noise. Hope that helps.

1. The fan on my Renegade was loud and mechanical sounding when I got the amp. Egnater sent me a new one and it's fine now.

2. I've had a cooling fan on two different amps for more than 10 years now. In the quiet of my practice room, when I'm not playing, the fan tends to be noticeable. BUT, that is before I play a note at any volume. While I'm playing, I don't notice it, ever. Also, When I'm in a room with others either practicing or gigging, the fan is NEVER audible over normal room noise, let alone when the band is playing. Recording? Forget it. The mic will never pick up the sound of the fan over what is coming through the speaker.

Since you speak of an issue with the Renegade that seems to be very common, and that I have experienced myself, I completely understand where you are coming from. Even with my noisy fan the above would apply. Mine had a mechanical, sound that made it sound like it would burn out early in addition to simply being louder than it needed to be. I do feel it necessary to say that I often get the impression that people who never get their amp out of their basement practice room are easily irritated by normal fan noise that, in the above practical applications, has zero impact on anything. fwiw

I hope you get your fan issue fixed.

Had the same problem. Ripped out a cooling fan from a old computer. Problem solved
