Renegade 65 Head - New Valve Time!!!

So, it was only a matter of time - I've been gigging my Egnater Renegade 65 pretty heavily, and I've just noticed a pronounced volume drop across both channels when I move the tube mix to the 6L6 setting.

So, time to buy some new valves!

Any advice from those that might have done this before? Perhaps a recommendation on manufacturers? I might swap out the EL34s as well, fancy trying something new.

Any advices is greatly appreciated.

Mark.

I think i'm in the same situation now... I'm not sure yet.

Shoot an email to Doug at dougstubes and he'll hook you up. I'm running his recommended 12ax7's, 6L6s, and KT88s on the EL34 side and I couldn't be happier with the tone!

Ditto Anolin. I sent Doug an e-mail with my sound comparisons (bands, styles) and he zeroed in on tube reco's. Mixture of various pre-amp and power tubes based on my description. I stuck with 6L6 and EL34 tubes to get used to the amp, but it was a nice improvement.

So, that was a disappointing couple of hours...

Removed the Egnater branded valves with no problem - however, when adding the new EL34s the lug sheared off in the valve socket. I wasn't being particularly forceful or aggressive, the plastic was just very weak.

Had to remove the chassis from the head cab to remove the reminents of the valve, and then I noticed that 2 of the bolts holding the chassis in place were actually turning freely!!! Looks like they were never done up from the factory!!!

Anyhoo.

Ordered some MORE valves, lets see if I have more luck next time. Also need to take a drive to a hardware store to find something to bolt the head to the chassis.

Disappointing day!

Sorry for you  .Something like that happend to me once.It was with my M&B Nomad55 and, when i swapped the tubes, one EL34 (M&B) just broke. If i remember, the plastic base was cut in 2 pieces...It was still under warranty, though, and the shop just asked me to send them a pic of the broken tube and sent me a new one...

this might work? I broke the Keyway off the bottom of some NOS 6L6's and used this to fix them.

Octal Tube Keyway Replacement, package of 4 - $10

Do you have valuable octal type tubes that work fine except the keyway has been broken off the base? Fix it with this simple and inexpensive product. Simply clean the remainder of the broken keyway from the base and slip one of these on. Will stay on by itself, or you can use a dab of silicon to attach if you wish.

Yep !It was indeed the Keyway (was broken off the base)..I managed to repair it but this is a better way !

OK, so all's well that ends well.

Got some new valves (TAD 6L6s and JJ EL34's), and they sound AWESOME! In the end the valve replacement and rebias was a doddle, absolutely no problems at all, and an already great sounding amp now sounds EVEN BETTER!!!!

The TAD 6L6s are particularly good - chimey and sparkly, they sound insanely good with the gain up.

:D

TAD 6L6's small bottles or the big ones ? EDIT :TAD 6L6 WGC is the "small bottle" and TAD 6L6 GC is the "big bottle".Their sound is quite different in my experience.

Ah,that's the one i prefer  !I didn't try them with the Renegade yet. With my M&B,they were at their best for clean sounds:chimey , sparkly,3d Fendery cleans. But not as good for overdrive/dist. So,it's good news for me if,indeed, they're "insanely good with the gain up" with the Renegade !I still got a few :)

Did you do the bias? or had a shop do it?

I want to change the tubes in my Renegade power section... Any advise?

very easy to bias yourself (thanks to Bruce ) Just look at the manual,it goes over everything. It gives you range for each tube and you can find the sweet spot.

Yeah, the re-bias was a doddle - very easy. Multimeter and a screwedriver, then refer to the manual for the correct range.

The last amp I had to rebias was an Orange GRO100 - a vintage 1971 death machine! I was terrified going into it live, sticking multimeter probes into it, locating the correct trim pot... Complete nightmare!

Renegade = 10 minute job. Easy.
