Morning Everyone,
For the last couple of weeks I've been experiencing a "muffled " tone coming from my Renegade Hd. It does this on both channels, more than one of my guitars with different pick-ups.... and i can't seem to EQ it out. Really sounds like there's a blankent over the speaker cab.
Tubes are biased right at 65ma on the 6l6 and 70 on the El 34 side.
I remember a poster a while back had a similar situation but can't fine the thread, and what the ending result was.....
Can anyone chime in and help me nail this down.
Thanks,
DJ

Is it a matter of personal taste? Or would anyone who listens to it agree that it is muffled and wrong?

The reason I ask is that the Renegades tend to be less bright/harsh than a lot of other amps. Some people call this "muddy" or "undefined". Others say it's "warm" and "rich".

I don't have a good answer for you, but more detail about the sound might help someone who can.

People love the renegade and I thought I loved mine but, in the end, I ran into the same blanket over the speakers problem. This could be Me, I'm used to a Plexi and jcm 800, bright crunchy. I still think the renegade is a nice amp, just not for me.

preamp tube??

I think it's a little bit like used strings...since i have many guitars (elec.,classic,acc. etc.)and don't have the time/money/courage to change the strings often enough,at some point i feel my guitar has a problem...then,i remember and i change the strings !Same thing with tube amps. When i notice a lasting difference with my amp's tone for more than a few days,i know i have to replace the tubes. Not necessarily all of them but i start with the Power tubes, then,i experience...Usually,it does the tric.

Can't say I've ever had muffled tone with my Renegade. I don't use the bright switch on either channel and I barely use any presence, so if I were you, I'd start with the tubes first and then a different speaker cable and finally, see if you can try a different speaker cabinet.

With both the Tourmaster and the Renegade, I wouldn't say the distortions were muffled, but they are smooth and creamy sounding- tube compression. It is hard to get "bite" and "snap" out of them. Overdriving the clean channel can help with that.

So to be clear, did the amp sound ok to you before, and now it doesn't? Or did it always sound muffled to you?
