Got my Renegade a few days ago and have been putting it through it's paces pretty extensively.

First off, my overall impression is that the amp is a keeper. I love both the gain and clean tones available. The amp is incredibly versatile for a 2 channel jobber. My main tones are high gain (thick thrashy type tones are my favorites) and clean. I don't do a lot of in between stuff, so...even though I really like the mid gain tones I am hearing, I am not a mid gain expert, so will limit my comments to high gain and clean.

A few initial points in general.

The footswitch is the bomb! You can set it up in MANY ways. Really like this

I pulled ALL the preamp tubes and replaced them with Mullard reissues, Chinese 9th gens and RFT's. This combination seems to work best to my ears. With that said, I REALLY wish manufacturers would not ship amps loaded with Sovtek preamp tubes. Maybe it is just me, but I think they suck in every amp I have ever heard them in (with the exception of VHT's :aww: )

I really like the Ruby EL34's it shipped with, but traded out the Sovtek 5881's for a pair of SED 6L6's.

The tube mix knobs on each channel do much more to the tone than the one on the Rebel I had did. Very nice. For the record, I prefer more of a 6L6 vibe for clean tones and full on EL34 for my high gain tones (not what I expected...I typically prefer 6L6 power sections for high gain tones as well.)

The amp looks to be VERY well built.

My Renegade HATES my ISP Decimator pedal   ....No matter what I do, when I put the Decimator in the chain, I get a TON of hiss. With that said, I don't need it, even at VERY high gain settings the amp is very quiet. Just thought this was worth noting.

My chain is:

Guitar----HBE Power Screamer (only use it to change the flavor of the tone, the amp does NOT need a boost to do metal)---Renegade. I also have a MXR 10 band EQ in the loop (I set the mids on my gain channel around 1 oclock and cut the 500k band about 6 and the 1k band about 3)

The Reverb is exceptionally good. Good enough that I am not using a touch of chorus on the clean channel (probably will at some point, but the on board reverb has controls for each channel and can get a very nice warm verb going on). Love it on the clean channel (have it set about 9 oclock) and even use a touch on the gain channel (have it just cracked enough to barely notice it).

Clean channel thoughts:

Very nice thick lush clean tones. If you dig in hard, you can get some grit...very pick responsive. LOVE IT. I keep all the toggle switches set in the down position on the clean channel. If you keep the gain low, it does NOT break up no matter how loud you play. GREAT clean tones.

Gain channel thoughts:

I prefer this channel with the tight and bright switches in the UP position. I like a nice tight low end and with the tight switch in the bottom position it gets a bit flubby for my taste. The Bright switch adds some sizzle and top end, which I like. With the switches in they up position, this channel sounds very similar to the SL2 module, which I love. I run my gain right around 3 oclock to get the saturation I want, but still retain good clarity. Very smooth gain.

I am still experimenting with the 18/65 watt switches....just looked at the amp and they are both in 18 right now. I like the master volume around 2 oclock and use the volume on each channel to set the overall volume.

There is also a second master that would be GREAT for lead work.

As many of you know, I have owned a crapload of amps and would rate this beast right up there with any I have owned for what I like. When you add in the fact it is less then a grand NEW, it is shocking how good it is. I don't have it here to compare side by side, but it remindes me A LOT of the MOD50 I had, which I settled on the Bman and SL2 modules as my go to pair.

Great amp. Period.

Oh yeah.....My amp came biased SUPER hot, so make sure you check the bias when you get yours.

Keep the critiques coming. Feedback from you is how we improve our stuff. Do you recall what the bias readings were out of the box? Of course it needed to be readjusted for the 6L6 tubes.
Thanks
Bruce

Thanks for checking in Bruce!

I do remember the readings out of the box. The EL34's were at 92 and the 5881's were reading 84.

 Great review, thanks!I was waiting for yours and i hope many others will come ...

Nice review tony...this is of course why I won't be buying one....but dayum' I'd love a MOD50 again :D

Good review Tony. I would need to try this amp myself as well.

good stuff good stuff Tony.

thank for the review. I like when ppl that have owned/played lots of amps, review.

can't wait to play mine. I'll probably use 6L6 too. what did you use to bias the amp? does it have external bias points or do I need to use a bias probe I have?

It has external bias points....very easy to use. Just like the modular series Eggy's and Randall stuff.

Great review! I got my new Renegade head 2 days ago, but have only been able to play it an hour or so.

I did not change tubes and I did not check the bias. It's right out of the box. Those differences aside, I still share many of the same observations in Tony's review.

I'm running the head into an Avatar 4x12 split with Vintage 30s and G12H30s. I've dialed in a great 70's Marshall tone (channel 2, gain and presence at noon, density at 11:00, all other tone settings at 1:00, 100% EL-34 on tube mix, tight on, bright off, and 18 watt setting) and benchmarked it against my favorite 1980 JMP Master Volume head -- the tone is spot on. That old Marshall is my benchmark tone. I'm looking for that tone with more gain, solo boosting, an extra channel, and an FX loop. The Renegade is a strong contender.

A few quick notes...
- Very flexible amp -- lots of different sounds in there.
- Great flexibility -- footswitch with channel options, and master volumes 1 and 2. Probably will be a great live amp.
- Tube mix is a lot more differentiated on this this amp (as compared to Rebel 30).
- Reverb sounds good, but comes on very strong for my tastes. I can't imagine turning in up higher than 10 o'clock.
- I have not used the loop yet -- that's my next step. I'm going to try and run my Boss GT-10 using the 4 cable method.
- All other things being equal, I find that the 65 watt setting sounds a little more open / airy than the 18 watt setting. Or, the reverse perspective would be that the 18 watt setting sounds slightly compressed as compared to the 65 watt.
- Amp is quiet, but the internal fan is loud. At low volume it can be distracting.

Overall, I think it's a great amp at a great price. I have other amps that sound a little better, but they have less features and cost about twice the price.

Thanks for taking the time to write a great review Tony. That would be a good candidate for a Renegade review thread in the amp reviews forum.

Piling onto my original review a few threads above....

FX Loop. Yes, I tried it and it works great. I've been running my Boss GT-10 thru a Splawn ProMod using the 4 cable method at the -10db loop setting. I hooked it up to the Renegade without changing a thing and the levels matched perfectly. FX sounded great, amp tone and gain comes through with great transparency.

Can it do Fender luscious cleans? If so what kinda Fender sound? Better than Rivera clean say?
Can u get them to break up nicely / bluesy if you turn up the gain on the clean channel?
