I've got a Renegade head. I like it, it sounds good enough I guess? There's a little more hiss than I would like especially on the bright switch. The whole amp is a little too bright for my taste. I don't want to feel like this amp is a compromise even though it really is.

My wife would like me to find a way to turn this "good enough" amp into something wonderful to the point that I'll stop looking at more expensive amps. Does anyone here have some suggestions? I want to make it much warmer, less treble-heavy, and less noisy across the board.

What cab/speakers are you using it with? Trying something meatier might be what you're looking for.

I'm running it through a 4x12 loaded with Celestion Vintage 30s. Are those weak/limp speakers, and no one told me?

v30's have alot of high mids wich usually comes across as being bright. mine is a combo with the egnater modded lead 80 and i think it fits the amp very well. not bright at all. also u could try some different tubes...

Have you got any tube recommendations? So far, the amp is stock... so I'm open to suggestions.

Hello,
what are your settings on the amp ? and what guitar are you using ?

looking at that tube chart :
http://www.egnateramps.com/download/Ren ... eChart.pdf

i'd do the following:

number the tubes that are currently in there. 1-6.

start switching them around. find the one that you LOVE in v1, as it dictates the way the rest of the tubes will react. your search just might end there.
try a jj ecc83 in v2 and v3. try a tung sol in v4. leave stock whatever stock tubes you want in the v5 for now.
try a sovtek lps in v6. all in all, that will cost you about....50 bux or so...unless you find them cheaper than here (try ebay, but make sure they're new).

i have yet to have a bad experience...i thought i got a bad tung sol, but found out later that they all test bad...i just didn't like the way it sounded in my amp as much as other tubes i tried.

you can't really go wrong trying some different preamp tubes, and, if you dont like them, chances are, you can flip them for most of your money back.

a great thick sounding balanced tube is the RFT in v1, if you dont mind paying around 25-50 depending where you get it, sometimes cheaper.. i got lucky and found one cheap.

I have the 212 combo and its hard for me to say this amp is bright.... I have neither of the bright switches on and I get plenty of brightness from just the treble and a hint of presence. I'd look at your tubes and the speakers first. JJ's are known for being darker so try one of those in v1 first and see if that makes a difference.

Is the problem primarily the clean or OD channel?
If the amp is too bright to start with, don't turn the bright switches on?
Where do you have the master Presence set?
What about the channel knob settings?
Using any pedals?

Really the Renegade would not normally be considered an "overly" bright amp. I would like to figure out why you are having this issue.

Please report back.........

My Renegade 212 does not hiss and could not be considered a "bright" amp. I can make it too bright, but basically it's a nice warm amp.

Hope you find a solution.

"I want to make it much warmer, less treble-heavy" & "The whole amp is a little too bright for my taste" Ok, it must be the first time i ever heard someone complaining about the Renegade being "too bright"..Really.With your description,i don't see how to help you.I don't use the "bright" switch much, if at all but that's the only way i could get it to sound maybe too bright... Or too much "Presence"?

I'm going with the speakers being an issue for you.

This is the first time I have ever read anyone claiming an Egnater is too bright. Ever.

First off, thanks to everyone for replying to my post. :D

Now I guess I start answering questions. I've got the presence turned all the way down, and I use mostly the clean channel plus pedals. A lot of pedals, a mix of buffered and true bypass, and I usually leave the compressor on all the time. I never use the bright switch, and I keep the EQ settings sort of "reverse scooped" with the mids fairly high and the bass and treble low. I've got a Les Paul and a Strat, and I stick to the neck pickups with the tone knobs turned most of the way down. Tube mix is in the middle position.

I used to leave my comp (Homebrew CPR) on all the time too, so I needed a volume pedal to kill the hiss when I wasn't playing. I've actually now come to prefer my comp as just a sustain boost for solos if I need it.

And to Gene (guitarslinger), I think we've a new chief treble nazi on our hands! :D

I was wondering about presence and resonance as well. Do you turn presence down? Resonance Up? It's going to be trebly/bright any time you use the bright switch, so leave it of.

Sorry for the echo in here. I just went back and looked more carefully at the posts. I guess you do know the basic ins and outs of the amp. Surprising that you still get an unsatisfactory result. With your tone knob down as well as the recommended amp settings, it should be nowhere in the neighborhood of bright. Maybe email Bruce's guy. You could have a problem with a cap that opens up the frequency range that isn't getting turned off property. Or more likely, it could be a switch. It's going to sound very bright indeed if the bright switch is broken.

Plug your guitars directly into the amp - no pedals, no effects, nothing. Now, set the EQ on channel one to about 1 or 2 o'clock for bass, mid and treble. Next, set the bright switch to normal. Does it sound bright now?

Well... that actually sounds like close to an answer to the problem. Unless the problem is just in my head/ears, of course. I accept that it is possible that it is just personal preference and not a problem with the amp itself.

I don't use the bright switch, but when I turn it on the amp immediately kicks in a sort of background hiss. I'm wondering if there isn't something inside the amp that has decided that the treble range, instead of going from 1-10, should start at around 8 and run up to 17. Then when I engage the bright switch it goes up to 25 and hisses like crazy. That's with my Les Paul, neck pup, tone knob turned down halfway or so.

It isn't so much that the amp is unsatisfactory, I just feel like I shouldn't have to use such extreme settings to get the tone I'm looking for. I'm using the Carvin cab I got with the V3 that the Renegade is a replacement for, and I remember that amp being pretty bright but not as much as this one. Maybe I'll hit the guitar shop tomorrow and try a few other amps and see if I think everything is bright or not.

Fairly bright, yes. :aww:

I switched between the Les Paul and the Strat, and they both sound pretty bright that way.

There shouldn't be hiss, even with the treble fairly high, or bight switch on. I suspect there is something wrong with your amp.
Email Nate at customer service, he'll help you diagnose and resolve the issue.

Ouch... I was afraid of that. Thanks though.
