First time i have ever blown an amp...

Was playing today, using record out, where the speaker output was going through an attenuator, then to a speaker, the attenuator was turned up enough that no sound was coming from the speaker.

Playing on channel one with the volume turned way up, the gain at 12 and master a 1 o'clock. Heard a pfft and the sounds dies out. Amp lights go out (blew the breaker on the power strip the head was plugged into)., Smell of electrical burntness at the head. I pulled the fuses and both look fine. Put them back in, reset the power strip and turn on the amp again, no lights, no sound.

That is as far as i have gotten. Any suggestions as to what might have happened, and if i can do any tests (pull tubes, etc) to see what kind of damage might be done? I can solder, but have no real expertise for electrical work.

ok just answered my own question: RTFM!
The fuses in the bias section at fine, but the fuse at the power corg plug in was very much blown.

Easy enough to replace, but i wonder if it was caused by the setup with the attenuator. I have a Radial ToneBone head switcher, i wonder if i am better off using that to create a load for using the record out feature for headphone playing with this amp? Maybe just a bad fuse? Any risk to replace the fuse and keep playing under either of these scenarios?

Thanks in advance for any help, i know these are probably fairly obvious questions.

OK now i am officially worried. There was a spare fuse in the holder, I out that back in, plugged the speaker output into a normal speaker cab, and powered the am up. As soon as i took it off standby there is a loud low end buzzing burping noise, i was able to switch it to standbye, but when i tried it again will all the volumes down, it blew the next fuse after a few seconds.

dammit! I have only had this thing for a couple weeks. Any diagnostics i can try?

Hey,

Sorry to read about your amp troubles... I would contact Egnater asap...They could give you the best troubleshooting advice.

I don't have experience with attenuators... The first thing I can think to check is maybe something wasn't connected properly when this happened. Maybe the input outputs reversed..? I thought using an attenuator will still push the speaker so there would be some sound?

I know the Egnater Rebel 30 amp has a silent record out. Maybe that would make things simpler.. but if your like me...haha spending a lot of $$$ on another amp isn't really an option.

Thanks for jumping in. I have emailed him and he responded. I have replaced the fuses and dropped him a reply, hoping for next steps soon.

Thanks!

Keep the rest of us informed as to what the problem ends up being...curious.

No problem, I'm sure he'll take care of everything for you!

Still troubleshooting.
Nate at Egnater had me remove each set of power tubes in turn and same problem, including with all power tubes removed. Now I am waiting to see if there are any other steps i can try.
Luckily i still have my rebel 20 to keep me going while i wait.

I would bring back the amp and get a new one if it's still possible  .With mine,i can play at very, very low volume, without an attenuator, and still get some very nice tones.A great surprise/bonus as i was afraid this amp would be too loud .In fact,it's better than the Rebel20 for that...Try to get a new one  !

I had a problem with my Renegade. I was playing real low one day and the amp just died. All the external fuses were fine. I opened it up but could find no internal fuses. I took the amp to Nate and it turned out an internal fuse blew. There are 6 internal fuses but they are contained inside of these little black boxes that are soldered to the various pcbs. I was looking for fuses, not little black boxes.

Sounds like you might have other issues though. Good Luck.

update on this for those who were tracking.

Nate at Egnater was great with me, although we did all our convo's via email and there were sometimes when i waited a day or two to get a response with the next step. At the end, he had me pull each set of power tubes and i had the same issues. I pulled ALL the power tubes, same issue. I switched out all the preamp tubes (luckily i had 6 in house) and same issue.

Nate gave me an RMA number and i have shipped it to a repair center in RI to have them work on it. I'm disappointed in the trouble for an amp that is less than 6 months old, but I feel like Egnater has done well by me with support and repair. I will chime in again with any details on time to get it fixed and returned. I don't expect it to be less than 30 days, but maybe I'll get lucky. In the meantime, i am really glad i never sold my Rebel 20 and am happily playing through it while i wait.
