Hi guys
Is it safe to use a 5751 or a 12AT7 in the PI(V6),V1, V3, V4 (V3 and V4 are the gain channel tubes) to lower the gain a bit on the distortion channel? I want to increase the gain range on that channel without affecting channel one too much. I mean channel one has enough gain so I'm not worried if the gain lowers on that channel.
Any successful experiments? Can you share your findings?
Thanks

I'd stay away from 12AT7's. They tend to be sterile sounding (good for the PI though). Try a 5751 to lower the gain a bit. Shouldn't be any issue functionally though.

Yes, it's safe to use in any of those slots. I'd also agree with above, stick with the 5751's in them. Other than the PI, you can use the AT7 there. I mean you are fine to try them in there, I've just not had much luck at all doing that. Thin and sterile are good words.

Thanks for the suggestions.
What results did you guys get using the 5751 and where did you use it?

V1 and the PI make the biggest impact IMO. V1 just reduces the overall gain a bit.....maybe a bit smoother. PI slot also smoothes out the tone. Those are just the basic observations. I always recommend folks to have at least a few of these on hand and try them in different slots just to see.

There are 2 tubes in the back of the M4 chassis. Can anyone tell me which one is the PI?

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but there is no PI in the M4. The PI is part of the power amp circuit.

You're right.(at least,it should be ...)

How does the PI affect tone??
Here is a link to an article on it

Digging up an old thread but found this to be very helpful. My Renegade that I just picked up, is a couple of years old and still has the original tubes. After reading this article, I tried a few different tubes in the PI slot.
GT12ax7M: Slight improvement over the stock one. Little bit clearer in the low mids.
JJ ECC81(AT7): Meh, lifeless.
JJ ECC803 S: Liked it, nice gain, bite in the crunch channel.
JJ ECC83S: Keeper! Much better note definition, no muddy lows/mids. Nice gain.

So, just by changing that one tube, it does make a notable difference in how your amp behaves. So give it a try.

Now off to explore V1,V2... ;-)

When I was messing with V1, I found that Channel 1 became dull and lifeless with ECC81's. I think Bruce did the best he could in that the channels have to work US-British and I think the mix is about perfect with ECC83's. You can warm the channel or change the mids by going Tung-Sol or EH, JJ's are big on aggression, very Rock. I use a ECC81 in V4, it tames some of the Egnater gain tone. I used a Tung-Sol in V1 but found that on the EL34 side it was not biting enough so went back to JJ. JJ's can get very glassy with single coils but you can always turn the tone down on the guitar. Thanks for the link to GuitarAmpBlueprint roodboy, that will keep me awake over X-Mas. I will have to try messing with the phase inverter, can my tone get any better.....
