So, I'm really considering the Renegade as my next amp purchase. I just have some questions regarding tube configurations. What do each of the 5 preamp positions control? I'm assuming V5 is the PI. I also believe that it comes stock with Sovtek tubes, which seem to be very durable, but are not the most sonically pleasing. What tubes (both pre and power) have you guys tried? What have you liked/disliked about them?

Has anyone swapped the Stock EL34's with JJ EL34L's in the Renegade? I have a couple laying around and was thinking of giving it a whirl....

Renegade kills with KT88's in the crunch channel. I have some NOS Sylvania 6l6's in the clean channel, but most likely any decent 6l6 will do. I have a mix of chinese and Tung Sol Reissue pre amp tubes with a Sovtek LPS in the PI slot. Sounds really great.

I sent an email to Doug at Doug's Tubes and told him I played mostly classic rock and blues and wanted more overtones on channel 1 and a fuller sound on channel 2 while still maintaining the crispness. He recommended the following tubes.

Svetlana 6L6GC's and the Tung-Sol EL34B's. For the 6 x 12AX7's, go with a Tung-Sol in V1, a Ruby HG+ in V2, Penta 12AX7M in V3 a Ruby AC5 select($11.50) in V4-V5 and a Sovtek LPS in V6.

I retubed the amp with his recommendations in November 2011 and was more than pleased with the results both alone, at practice and live. You can hear it for yourself in a fan video of our New Year's Eve show on our website (www.cryofstones.com). I would recommend the above tubes over the stock tubes.

To be fair to Egnater, I bought the Egnater Renegade at Guitar Center when it first came out instead of the Marshall JVM 410 after much playing and comparing. After a few months of running it through the paces, I stopped looking at or even browsing for other amps. We recorded our first CD with the Egnater Renegade with the original tubes. The only reason I retubed is because a power tube went microphonic and thought it would be a good time to experiment. All of the other fan videos on our website are with the Egnater Renegade and the original tubes.

Can you describe the characteristics of your Renegade with the KT88's? More British sounding? Smoother? What??

thanks

Hmmmm, I'd say a broader spectrum vs. the 34's. More and tighter bass, yet still retains that nice upper mid bite. Guess they just kind of sound "bigger" overall to me. I like these more than the 6550's. Seem to retain the british vibe, yet sound not quite as mid/upper mid focused. Hope that helps.
