Some of you have been following my threads on this subject. My dad replaced the 3 filter caps for me and said two of theold ones were shot (not holding charge). So I am about to fire the amp up and se if all is well..

Stay tuned...

Begs the question - how could 2 caps go bad on an amp that is only a few years old? Could there be something wrong with underlying curcuitry that is causing the problem? I don't gig - I just record in my basement recording studio. I take care of all my gear very well.

How could one tire go bad on an car that is only one week old ?

The answer:
The supplier of the car manufacture delivered a batch of bad tires.

So I can start a drama and call the laywer to charge the delivery
company. But I´m not a friend of blaming other people.

For Your question:
There is nothing wrong with the underlying circuitry. Maybe You
should ask some experts.

Best regards,

Peter

I still think it is a valid question. And I am not questioning if the circuitry design is bad. I am questioning if there might be some other faulty component that is actually the underlying cause and I want to know if there is one particular component that might be worth checking. In other words, could there be a bad component that led to 2 filter caps going bad? Much like a misalignment would cause tires to prematurely go bad. Keep getting tires without fixing the misalignment then the tires keep getting prematurely worn out.

Don't get defensive Peter - I like your amps a lot. If I didn't like your amps I wouldn't have driven out of my way to Bad Steben on several occasions to pick them up.

I could swear I made a post last night saying the amp seems to be working now. In any case, the amp seems to be working fine. Tried the winged C power amp tubes with several preamp tubes - EH, Chinese and Tung Sol new edition. Not sure which I like best. With minor adjustments to tone controls they all essentially give similar sound.

One thing that I noticed and I am not sure if this is normal for high gain amps. When I push the gain really high (Chan 1 mode 3 with gain between 8-10 and Chan 2 with gain between 8-10), the amp makes persistent crackling noises. Similar to the noise that a guitar will make when you have a bad volume pot and turn the knob. Makes these noises with all the preamp tube types. Haven't switched the power tubes, but the power tubes are brand new. Is this something I should be worried about or is that normal high gain noise?

Really want to make sure I am back in business before screwing the amp back into the cabinet.

thanks,

brian

Brian,

it´s indeed possible that Your V1 is bad. When I select
100 preamp tubes this is the result:

20% making noises like crackling, popping and screaming
60% are good enough for V3 to V6
20% are highgrades for V1 and V2

Now we have 80 tubes working. I only use 50 tubes, because
30 of them don´t sound in the right way. You can imagine, that
some of the tube dealers don´t do that like me. So it is possible
that You can get new tubes that are defective.

It needs some experience to fix a tube amp. You know that
You can write or call me every time when it comes to support.
Your amp could be easily fixed long time ago.

Best,

Peter

Thanks Peter. I guess one of the reasons I put off getting the amp fixed was because I have been playing mostly my acoustic guitar lately and also I have other amps that were working (including VH4S). So I have been able to get by :)

tschuess,
