Hi all
Sorry if this is an old topic - i searched the forum but found no recent posts on the subject

I think it is time to replace my Herberts tubes a couple of the power tubes are glowing somewhat dimmer than the others and sonically i dont have the same amount of drive as i used to have not that i use a lot but it just seems to be lacking the fluidity / saturation. I guess this could be both an issue with the dull power tubes and / or the preamp tubes.

So as i guess you all expected what are the best / recommended tubes at the moment.

I look forward to your responses

I think Peter currently recommends Ruby EL34BHT, SED EL34 are also said to be great tubes for the Herb and I still like my TAD EL34B-STR. Even though a lot of people seem to have reliability/quality issues with those, mine are going strong for 1 1/2 year and no failure yet.
That being said the Herbert offers so many possibilities in terms of tube choice that only you can decide whats the best tubes for you ;)

I'd also recommend replacing the preamp tubes as well...
Ruby 12AX7C5 HG+ in V1/V2
Ruby 12AX7C5 in all other positions

Depends What Kind Of Sound/Music you want/want to play...

The Herbert can sound so different with different power tubes or mixes of them...

For me SED Winged =C= 6650's Rule....

Roid RAGE

I know its a general question but how do the 6550s differ sonically to EL34s

The SED 6550's offer a bigger bottom end, tamer top end and strong mids. Extra power is
a given, but they seem to make the Diezel's even more organic.

Hmm Im not sure if i need more bass than the EL34s gave, the music I play is to a degree metal but not in the traditional playing sense - it is very quick and so needs as tight a sound as possible, especially as there is a lot of tapping high notes whilst dropping down to low end chords / open notes. Mids and 'pleasant highs' are essential.

I need a decent level of saturation as previously mentioned as the natural compression will smooth out the highs to low jumps.

Although its a joke clip while we are writing you may get an insight into my playing style here - https://www.myspace.com/aliases its gtr rig btw so dont think i have made Herbert sound awful.

I am also looking at doing a tube change, as mine are getting older. I think I am going to try KT88's. Supposed to be a very tight and clear sounding tube. The fact that the VHT Ultra Lead and the new Bogner Twin Jet use KT88's makes me think it's worth giving them a shot in the Herbert.

From what I've been told, KT88's are kind of a "hot rodded" EL34 and 6550's are kind of a "hot rodded" 6L6. I tend to prefer the EL34 Flavor so I'm going to bank on me prefering 88's over 6550's.

Some guys swear by EL34's in a Herbert, and they could be right. :dunno:

^^^ NO!!! I've had so many problems with the new JJ's it's ridiculous. I do however love the way they sound. Seriously The EL34BHT's are the shit, nuff said.

Pretty much - the shit, or crap. But JJs E34L PTs in Herbert rule. Ruby is just Chinese crap re-branded. Try the EL34BUTTSCOOPXYZs next time. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Nuff spewed...

You two are acting like a pair of 'tards.

The Ruby tubes are obviously a good tube, after all..... it's what Peter prefers to use strait from the factory.

JJ's are good tubes also. Although I've never used an EL34 from them, I have been happy with the JJ6L6 in my Powerball.

The point is both of you guys are missing it all together completely, it's 6550's and KT88's that it's where it's at.

I've been using JJ's in my amps for years and have never had an issue.
Right now my Herbert is loaded up with JJ EL34's and it sounds wicked.

a pair of Tung-sol EL-34B

a pair SED EL-34

and a pair Gold Lion KT-77 =

Papa bear built the amp with the awesome feature of running deferent tubes!

why not rock the shit?
