I just had some Shuguang 9th gen and a JJ ECC83S in there.
WELLLLLL....
I stuck a NOS RCA 12AX7A in the lower V1 position, and a GE 12AT7 in the line driver V2(V10??) upper socket, and HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would say these matter every bit as much as the V1 or V2 in any of your modules. The thing just opened up with the clearest, most pleasantly grinding, distortion EVER. It's twice as easy to play now. I'm not sure which one made the bigger difference, but I'm guessing the V1. It just sounds SO killer now. I'm guessing the untested 9th gen was of lower quality, and killing my tone. It was adding some annoying grating quality to everything. It even might have been dying and going microphonic.
Don't neglect these two crucial tonal points in your signal chain.
It also cut the noise a little bit.
