Rig-Talk, the last haven for real musicians

Are musicians just a bunch of whiney pussbags now-a-days? Rig Talk is about the only forum where you don’t get shat on for mentioning 100 watt amps and big 412 or larger cabs. Apparently we’re the last haven for those who like big gear and big sound.

I don’t frequent other forums, but do skim topics now and again when trying to look up specs or do some research. I swear its nonstop 20 watts is all you need, big cabs are too heavy, 1x12 grab and go combo, and how much does the guitar weigh. Top it off with silent stages and wanting gear that fits in your backpack. Even bass players are all “check out my amp the size and weight of a note card.” “I go DI to board, speakers are too heavy to bring to a gig.”

What the fuck??? Are you a musician or are you a fucking pussy that barely has the strength to hold a pick. Heavy gear comes with the territory. If it weighs too much for your limp dick ass to move then get the fuck out!

This’ll sound like old man yelling at clouds…. I came from the days of the 1000 lb peavey combo amps. It was either that or all 100 watt half and full stacks. No one bitched about “it’s too heavy.” Fuck all what it weighed. You just deadlifted your shit and lugged it down the block.

Screw all this lightweight pussy horse shit everyone else is after. When I finally expand my space later this year (hopefully) I’m building myself some 4x15 cabs.

Bands who use real gear sound better, consistently, no contest, no question, until you're playing theater sized venues where the gap evens out a little bit. But EVEN THEN, real amps sound better most of the time IMO, because most people don't take the time to dial their modelers well.

The TGP types wail about how their grab-n-go pedal modeler is better because it's light or whatever, then they play and they're completely at the mercy of whatever the sound reinforcement is
 
Where can you open up a 100 watt amp today? Places like L'Amour East are long gone.

I don't get that either. You're gonna be all anal about your sound programing amps, effects, IR's, etc. then crap out on actually dialing it in well and hope the sound guy is half ass decent enough to compensate.
 
I'm just glad I'm part of a generation that got to gig with 100 watt amps before any of this silent stage bullshit started. Was it necessary? Other than outdoor gigs, probably not. Was it detrimental to my hearing? I'm sure it was. But it was a damn good time.

Generally speaking, if a venue has a silent stage requirement, they aren't a venue worth playing at unless youre an elbow-patches-on-tweed jacket jazz twink
 
It is true, brothers and sisters, we are the last bastion for 100 watt tube amps and 4x12 cabs. Perhaps, it is because we appreciate the way they cause physical pain to be in the same room when playing one, because we are masochists in a way. Or, maybe, it's because most of us here are metal heads in one form or another and we wouldn't be caught dead taking a digital rig to play Iron Maiden or Cannibal Corpse tunes in our cover bands.

Also, I just realized, I sadly only own 1 100 watt tube amp, the rest are 45, 50, 80, and 85. Though, my Marshall power amp is a dual 100 watt monobloc power amp, so maybe that makes me MORE metal?
 
I’m retarded. At home I have three separate half stacks and a couple combo’s. Last time I was playing live I was using an hd500 floorboard…. I loved it. Setup and breakdown was nothing because I was going into the PA. Got on the tone library and found some good tones to start with and expand on..or just straight up use.

I'm not really a metal guy and unfortunatey don't have any big iron amps anymore but there's nothing more satisfying than 100 watters through 4x12s. I haven't gigged since that late 90s and my little music room was getting rattled. Hell, I had a Rivera K-Tre through a Recto 4x12 in it at one time and that folks, was serious overkill :LOL:
 
My mgl is 50 because they didnt offer 100 watt at time. But it is louder than most 100 watters anyway

I feel like a badass now! As soon as I'm done hanging up these goddamn curtains I'm going to crank my shit up for a couple seconds!!
 
I actually follow the advice from the Dockers endorsee's crowd when it comes to lightweight gear. I just take the tubes and transformers out of the heads and the speakers out of the cabs to make everything lighter to haul to gigs at Krogers.
 
Pretty sure bands have been pretty much been doing this for years. I never understood putting the 2d stack of marshalls up. Very fucking Low T
 
I was for a long time the only local bass player I know of that was still schlepping a full SVT rig into tiny bars. I also always used my full PA rig which included a quartet of DSRs and a pair of Yorkville LS801Ps. Guitarist used a full stack and the drummer had a massive kit. Double bass, double floor toms, 2 snares, 2 hats. And I close mic’ed that shit. 13 mics on the drum kit alone. In a bar. Anyone who says it can’t be done successfully doesn’t know what they’re doing. Long after I dismembered that band I was still busier than I wanted to be whoring myself and my PA rig out to local bands.

The back of our t-shirts said “ Damn that’s loud”.
