Got an opportunity to trade my Mesa Roadster for a VHT CLX(both combo versions) bt I've got it inside my Kemper now, so it seems like a good way to try new things. Looking like it's going to be a straight up trade. Just want to know the value on the clx combo and what to expect. I play mostly metal(ish) but dabble in quite a few different genres. Does the CLX get you there or does it need a boost? Any info on the CLX is GREATLY appreciated!

Depends on your flavour of metal I guess. With the right guitar and pickups I am completely happy with no boost in front of my CLX, and I am a HUGE boosting (and metal) fan. With other guitars I like to up the signal a bit with a small amount of clean boost (level between 9 and 12 oclock, gain=0). I haven't owned an Ultralead but there was a CLX thread a few days back and some peeps were saying that the UltrLead is gets more brutal than the CLX. The thing that floors me on the CLX is that even during full-out metal assault on a boosted crunch channel a volume knob twist brings you to a *very* useable clean. CLXs are in the 1500-2000 price range and so the combo should be somewhere in that range I would think.

VHT made a clx combo huh? I didn't know that.
I looove mesa stuff but anything vht has always been more versatile and better sounding if you ask me.

So, turns out it's a Classic Combo, I asked for the serial number and Fryette told me it is the earliest incarnation of the CLX. I'm guessing this would drop the trade value down significantly.

It is the exact same amp...The "classics" are actually kind of rare...

So the Classic isn't the CL100?

No. The CL100 is a completely different amp. The CLX/Classic/UL all have the same preamp, while the Ultraleads power amp is KT88 based, and the CLX/classic is El34 based, with the option to run 6L6s as well I believe. Fryette/VHT had to change the name of the classic line when ole Mr. Peavey tried to (or did) sue Steve Fryette over the amp line of "classic", which apparently Peavey owns (hence there Peavey classic amps).

So RECAP: CL100/CL50, EL34 based, different preamp than UL/CLX/Classic, not as over the top in gain structure, but plenty heavy, 2 channels, each able to do clean or overdrive, just a tad different feel on each.

UL/CLX/Classic: All have same preamp, different power amp section, CLX is the same as the Classic, just different name....Kapeesh?

I'd make that trade in a heartbeat, the CLX (Classic) is one awesome amp.

Looks like we're striking a deal.

Alexandre, if you're reading this, sign-up man, we'd love to have you around!
