Ive come to the conclusion that tubes wont make an amp something it’s not. But they will get that last 5-10 % tone that may be missing…

In a nutshell…..

I’ve yet to find anything that tops my old Chinese square getters in V1. For current production, the EH7025 and gold pin JJ83s are it. Yes the gold pins sound different.

In what way do the gold pins sound different? I've only tried a few brands but agreed on the EH7025. Pretty interesting how 2 of the same model can sound different as well.

Doubt it’s the gold, but rather they are probably hand selected. They are less cluttered in the mids and a bit smoother/brighter.

In what amp?

I like the square getter Chinese also. I had actually forgot them in an amp for a while and just pulled them out to test in other amps.

The old Sylvania 12ax7 are maybe a tad more musical but have a different mid focus than the square Chinese.

Planning to setup the Driftwood to see if I can get it to be less stiff with different tubes. Thinking the Philips 7581a will help this amp.

All Morris amps…..UK78’. XSIII, SiRROM, and SIRROM 60.

Dave Friedman has debunked the gold pin numerous times.
All I can say is that the gold pins sound better. As do my non labeled JJ’s that came out of various ENGL amps about 15 years ago. The new ones I’ve bought sound noticeably different……and not in a good way.

I bought some tubes (not gold plated) a couple weeks ago and read this on the site. Don’t know if it’s true, maybe marketing:

“The pins are plated with gold to prevent corrosion and to protect the pins (they also fit a little more snugly in the socket). Electro-Harmonix also selects their best stock for their ‘Gold’ line.”

When I had my tube preamps and heads..my favs in V1 were the late 50's long black plates..RCA/Sylvania...but my secret weapon was the Raytheon long black plates...best sounding tubes in my opinion. Most of the good one came out of the old organs..always had good luck with Baldwin and Lowery labeled tubes.

Gotta think that platting will scrape right off after a few pulls tho..
New tube sockets are tight..
