I've got an RT2/50 at home and I'm really enjoying playing with it, my question, is there a noticeable jump in make quality and quality of sound with the VHT 2/50/2 over the Randall?

I doubt it and I own a VHT2502. Both are great power amps from my understanding. If you lived close to NC I'd say let's a/b them

Shit, not even close. I'm really not close to anywhere :( and that's the problem. I think I'll stick out the Randall though, love the options of any octal tube combination!

I'd like to hear some opinions also.

Bumpn this as I too want to hear more on this. I need a power amp and the RT2/50 seems like feature laden amp at a great price point. Anybody care to share more on this?

I been trying my ass off to find a trade for a 2/50/2 or 2/90/2. Might consider the RT2/50 but just would like to hear from some of you that have experience with these amps.

I went through the R&D process of amp searching back last year - trying to figure out everything about them as I needed a quality one to mate with my (at the time) incoming Mak 4.

I researched the glitzy Marshalls, the Mesas, the Randalls, the Fryettes, the older VHTs, man - so many of 'em... I learned a lot about a lot of things. Reviews, flaws, user feedback, longevity, simplicity, design superiority, so much. Price wasn't really a concern, I just wanted something that was uber powerful, neutral, and built to last. In my particular case, I say "neutral" because coloring the sound wasn't really what I wanted. If I did want to color the tone with the power section, I'd have looked at the Randall for its cool "switchability" vibe - this is a very cool option. Furthermore, the Marshalls were on the list, but they lacked some specific functions that were recommended to me by Andrew at Mako.

In my particular case, I went with the 2/90/2 loaded with KT88's due to the fact I don't think I'll ever push it hard enough to get into power tube saturation. Just gobs of clear NEUTRAL headroom to let my preamp do the talking. Fryette's got a great warranty, their customer service was mint with getting back to me on emails and calls, I received the unit - solid as hell - very quiet - and perfect for "my" applications.

My dealer mentioned that a lot of the Axe-FX crew were going with the 2/90/2 as well as it didn't muck up the sound too much... In some cases, EL34's hitting maximum stride would be a bonus, in my case, no dice.

Peace,
V.

Did you ever try Engl? I have a hit on an 840/50. I want a VHT/Fryette 2/50/2 or 2/902 but I have damn near given up hope of finding a trade. There was a thread over on the Fractal forum and those guys seemed to love the 840/50. I just have never heard much about it here - and these are that matters to me as I feel I am more familar with the folks on this board.

From my experience if you want a 2/50/2 or 2/90/2 and get something else you will always wonder if it is better than what you have and not be happy. Maybe just save till you find one.

Does not matter what everyone suggest, it matters what sounds good to you and that you have tried and know what amp works for you.

Perfectly said. Some might wonder why I've had my Preamp since before Christmas and, what, it's almost March and I'm finally pulling everything together?? It's because of this reason - get what I want, no compromise.

Peace,
V.
