I went through the R&D process of amp searching back last year - trying to figure out everything about them as I needed a quality one to mate with my (at the time) incoming Mak 4.
I researched the glitzy Marshalls, the Mesas, the Randalls, the Fryettes, the older VHTs, man - so many of 'em... I learned a lot about a lot of things. Reviews, flaws, user feedback, longevity, simplicity, design superiority, so much. Price wasn't really a concern, I just wanted something that was uber powerful, neutral, and built to last. In my particular case, I say "neutral" because coloring the sound wasn't really what I wanted. If I did want to color the tone with the power section, I'd have looked at the Randall for its cool "switchability" vibe - this is a very cool option. Furthermore, the Marshalls were on the list, but they lacked some specific functions that were recommended to me by Andrew at Mako.
In my particular case, I went with the 2/90/2 loaded with KT88's due to the fact I don't think I'll ever push it hard enough to get into power tube saturation. Just gobs of clear NEUTRAL headroom to let my preamp do the talking. Fryette's got a great warranty, their customer service was mint with getting back to me on emails and calls, I received the unit - solid as hell - very quiet - and perfect for "my" applications.
My dealer mentioned that a lot of the Axe-FX crew were going with the 2/90/2 as well as it didn't muck up the sound too much... In some cases, EL34's hitting maximum stride would be a bonus, in my case, no dice.
Peace,
V.
