Absolutely incredible.
Not just the performance, setlist and musicicanship. But the guitar tone!!!! OMFG!!!

The way he accurately recreates the tones from the albums is amazing.

One second he has this shimmering, articulate, glassy overdrive and the next second he has this thick, sweaty crunch with loads of chunk. His two Marshall 4x12's were woofing with any slight palm muting. It was like grunge meets Led Zeppelin. Killer stuff.

Now I'm searching for a similar sound.
I guess I need a Vox AC30 and a powerful thick sounding tube poweramp run in stereo? Help me out guys!

Not sure what to get to approximate his album tones, but I think he's been using the same Demeter TGP-3 and VHT Classic Power Amp ever since the "Core" days.

I sold Dean a few guitars back in the early 1990's including a beautiful and toneful 1965 Gibson Firebird V in Pelham blue that he used in a few videos. Good Guy for sure.

Last I saw Dean live he had a few AC30's running into some Marshall cabs. I've read that he doesn't use a lot.
Mainly a Demeter TGP-3 preamp, S.I.B. Varidrive tube preamp pedal, classic Boss CE-1 chorus pedal. He's used lots of different guitars.

Wow cool!
He always been near the top of my favorite tones...especially the CD Purple. His rhythm tones are so thick and full and you can hear every note in his chords.

Last night he had two racks and an AC30 sandwiched between two slant 1960 4x12's. All the effects I noticed was chorus and wah.
He used four guitars during the show. A burgandy LP Standard, a black LP Standard. A silver or green Telecaster with a maple board, and a honey flame PRS.

YEP , totally agree about his tones. .I saw STP in Manchester, NH in 7/09 and I'd seen them before in ALbany ,NY. His sounds are what I like for tones too, and it's really not that hard getting them .He's used the AC30's in addition to the Demeter stuff for quite some time now, but always sounds great no matter what. I have a Demeter TGA3 combo where the 3rd channel sounds EXACTLY like him , and I've had a Demeter TGA2 for many years too .. The TGA3 sounds just like him though . Many of us though have gotten those sounds with jcm800's , 900's,etc and pedals! We used to play about 10 of their covers and it wasn't too hard. AS for the originality of his riffs though , that to me is the best part, and his brother's bass kicks butt as does the drummer and Weiland's songwriting p.s.. I have the "ARMY OF ANYONE" cd too and he has great tones on that too . Wonder if it's the same gear?

Eric

Completely agree about STP ..... they are one of the best.

For what ever reason a lot of people look over what a great sound comes from EL84's. I do not know of a tube that produces better harmonics. Look at all the great sounds that have been created with these tubes. The overdrive sound is fantastic glass.

I saw them last summer and he was using VHT heads. They are great live!

What do you mean "VHT heads" ?

Love STP....the songs, the tunes, the whole package.

If you ever get a chance to play a Demeter TGA3, you'd see where the base of that tone comes from. Its a very unique saturated and compressed gain that just lends itself to those tones....particularly from CORE.

Love me some STP! I saw them right before they went on hiatus and they killed it live!
I think Robert's bass lines are overlooked also, as they are some of the most well thought out and melodic in all of rock music

Maybe the show was a fly date where they didn't have their normal rigs. The Demeter pre, VHT power amps, Marshall cabs and AC30's have been his rig forever. I saw them multiple times in the mid 90's and saw them on the last tour and it has always been the same.

I have seen them a few times too and I had never seen VHT heads either.. Dunno?

no, he doesn't use VHT heads.

He still, and has always played:

Demeter TGP-3 preamp
Rocktron Intelliverb (He bought mine)
VHT 2100 Classic power amp
Marshall cabs

PLUS

Vox AC30's

He splits with an old Boss chorus CE??? Supposedly, this is just used for splitting duties, and not chorus, but I can't confirm that.
