I love the tone on this album and obviously, Jab's playing. He's a total monster and the king of the guitar fill between verses in my opinion. The only guy i may like slightly more in this style of playing is Michael Shenker but love both of these guys.

Anyways, like Shenker, I think the early tone came from 100 and 50 watter NMV Marshalls and then the early JCM 800's before going to the 2210's in the later 80's. Seeing as this album came out in 1982, I am guessing his tone comes from either NMV or JMP Marshalls cranked. I am able to approximate the rythm tone with my 2204 with the MV on 7 and preamp on 7 (everything elsed pinned) and a hot humbucker (JB or aldrich) but it sounds like he was juicing slightly with something on the leads.

I have read that for a while he had an echoplex that he would run into his Marshalls because it gave him a slight increase in gain. I listen to this album and I hear slight chorus and the standard reverb and short delay. When he taps with legato or does some muted pentatonic runs, sounds like there is more sustain and compression than just the amp. What do you guys hear? Treble boost or maybe just an EQ boost or is that what the echoplex pre can do to an already hot amp?

Maybe I am having a moment; but I thought Jabs always used Fender Prosonic heads?

I always hear a compression to the recordings on the early 80"s Scorps recordings that really made those Marshall's sing in a very musical way. A bit of studio magic dust if you will. I always loved those tones too and could never quite get my amps to sing like that at club/rehearsal volumes. Blackout and Love at first sting were my benchmark tones many years ago. Great stuff.
I think there is some subtle wha use from Mathias on a lot of leads, or possibly a treble boost? Could just be a tubescreamer also. There is some interesting stuff on the Metro forum about his 1987 head and something he called a "transformer killer" that he used?

Also some info about him using some Bill Lawrence pickups that contributed to his tone in some ways too. Whatever he used, he got some killer tone and has great chops no doubt.

The Fender ProSonic wasn't around during the time frame in question.

I hear my first concert in 1982 the scorpions and iron maiden it was killer saw them next at the US festival they killed it at both shows ! Yes I'm old...

Rhythm would be Rudolf Schenker on his probably stock Gibson Flying V. Jabs I assume was using the Gibson Dirty Fingers pickup in an Explorer.
Amps, probably late 70's Marshalls if they recorded it in 81.

The rest is studio fairy dust that can't recreated any more    Some early 80's albums sound terrible, but this one is amazing.

Who produced these early Scorps albums anyways? Wonder if any of that WAgener German engineering is on this stuff... he can often be associated with a lot of the "good" or "great'" recordings in the 80's.

EDIT: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dieter_Dierks Dieter Dierks looks like the producer.

Most likely stock Gibson pickups into a 2204 into GB loaded cabs. I know Jabs start had EMGs in it when I saw them in 84...not sure if they were around on Blackout though.

Not too difficult to get that tone really.

Agreed and I have it for the most part as any bucker on the hotside through a cranked MArshall will do it but there is something about the lead tone that has me wondering what pixy dust was sprinkled on it at the studio board or was he getting a little assist. End of the day I guess it doesn't matter much as I could more or less push the amp over the edge with a koko boost, eq pedal, TS-808, or even an echo plex type pedal in a box. I kind of want to get a treble booster so maybe that'll make me happy too. I hear that signature cocked wah in a few spots on the leads as well which is simple enough.

Great sounding album for the time though. Everything is just right. I compare that to some of the others and it blows them away.

Going from memory . .

Jabs used 50 watt heads in those days. The 63 Strat he has had a Bill Lawrence hum in it. Can't speak for all the tracks on that album but No One Like You was cut with a 59 LP. If you can dig up the old GP mag with Jim Hall on the cover, he details the setup.

L-90 Bill Lawrence pup which looks to be pretty hot. I have a JB2 right now in there so I am probably in the right ballpark.

Yep...he also talks about his gear in a super old issue of GW with EVH on the cover. Oddly enough I had that issue out and looking at it a few days ago...I'll see if he goes into anymore detail and post it here when I get a chance.

Fantastic record, this one & Lovedrive....... my faves!

Greenbacks, agreed, and I would bet they were "blackbacks". Brighter & a bit more aggressive.

The blackbacks do sound awesome .. I am running through Weber legacies which I find are not aggressive enough right now but I also have a cab with greenbacks that crunch up the tone nicely. Would love a set of blackbacks but not sure what I would have to pay on those. I suppose scumback is now remaking these as well so that is always an option but i better stop here before i start talking like Richedie.. actually just noticed these: http://www.scumbackspeakers.com/bm_series.html reasonable prices on these for a change! Cheaper than celestions. Finally the prices have come down to earth.

No BS...

One of my friends back then had parents that would not let him go to the "US" festival...

So he told them he was going camping that weekend instead with friends.

But you guessed it he lied to them went to the US festival and saw Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Triumph, Quite Riot, etc...

Sure enough he was right up in front of the stage during scorpions or Van Halen and there were photographers from all over taking pictures and covering the event.

Anyway clear shots of his "front row mug" in the crowed ended up in large photo and cover story of the of the concert in the LA Times...

His mom saw it and totally identified him from the picture he got busted big time...

I saw the picture too and there was no getting out of it... grounded!!!

Lovedrive! I borrowed this album from a friends sister and kept avoiding giving it back!  Love that album. NMV marshalls all over that one. Blackout sounds more 2203/4 to me. But great stuff nontheless! I had tickets to monsters of rock in 88, I was in the military and my brother was gonna take me. But the flight from Korea was delayed enough to turn a 13 hour flight into a 21 hour mess. So I missed it. But I finally got to see the Scorps in 2001 and they were awesome!

Great story! I feel the pain..had tickets to the Number of the Beast tour...but got grounded. Same for Piece of Mind....almost got away with sneaking out for that one but....got caught. Dammit! Did see them in 2013 though...sounded great.

76 for the 2203 and 2204 JCM.

Seems like I like more of the stuff I think was done with a JMP, than the JCM.

Doesn't take much gain, because there's gazillion of us circle jerking over the Plexi tone.
