I generally prefer the SD-1 because it does what I need for a boosted Marshall tone that’s aggressive but adds sustain for leads. Is there anything out there that is similar to an SD-1 that is worth checking out? I’m not big into pedals and have a keep it simple mentality for what’s in the front of my amps. What’s out there that sounds great?

MXR Zakk Wylde OD. Kills with Marshalls. Don't use it much these days, but it's stayed with me 10 years, while many others came and went. It's a great pedal.

one of the coolest/easiest mods for sd-1 is jumper d6. makes it more like a tubescreamer but keeps the boss qualities. worth trying if u have an older sd-1 that isnt a computer chip.

Per above, MXR Zakk Wylde, or MXR Custom Badass Modified Overdrive, or I believe the MXR GT-OD even has a switch inside to go to Zakk Wylde circuit mode. Just more tweakability and gain than the stock SD-1.

I cut C6 out of my SD-1. Sounds a lot better.

I like the fulltone fulldrive 2 mosfet a lot. Similar in a way and does a ton and has the boost.

You'd be surprised at the differences between an 80s MIJ SD1 and a MIT SD1..the 86 I have is clearer and adds something nice in the high end that isn't there in the MIT version. You can find the 80s versions on ebay or reverb, 50-70 usually.

Yeah GT-OD is great! Has the SD-1 vibe, the switch for 2 different tones ( basically more / less bass ) and the EQ is way more flexible than a stock SD-1.
Note that you have to pull the PCB out of the case to flip the switch. There's a mod to put a micro switch on the outside of the case though.

SD-1 WAZA is also good. Much better than the current cheapo SD-1 you can get at GC for $50, but kinda overpriced if buy new.

I have a bent paperclip that is custom made just for flipping that switch without taking out the PCB.

The Fulltone Fulldrive is based on the Boss SD-1.

Overdrive I use most these days is Fulldrive 2 Version 2 and Fulldrive 3.

They are my favorite boost. I will be picking up a second one for another rig.

The dragon sounds super badass. How do you order them? I didn’t see a purchase option on the site and it looks like your white one (I’m at work at the moment) is now sold out. I’m leaning more towards the dragon to check out, is there a reason to get the other one from vfe?

Would it be unrealistic to keep the dragon on at all times and also click on another pedal for solos to loosen things back up?

I am using a KLON derivative these days but I have this one and quite like it. He used to do this mod to an SD-1 before just making it it's own pedal. Sounds like a hybrid TS on roids with a cleaner less hissy SD-1. Really nice circuit. The boost side engaged added a bit too much noise on my board but the OD itself is fantastic. https://www.facebook.com/Onfloor-Audio- ... 904873482/
