This will be the third time i have seen them live doin the Thin lizzy tribute gigs, they always kick ass! John is awesome live and his tone is always huge... Jose modded Marshalls cranked on 10!!!

Should be a great show, im lookin forward to it!

Please take the roof off for Phil !!!

Enjoy. Sykes rulez, Gorham should use a bit less FX and dump his shitty Floyd crap machine :D

John Sykes is one of my favorite guitarists! Amazing vibrato and huge amount of feel in his playing. Not forgetting his great singing. \m/  \m/ Enjoy the gig, Dan!

Olaf, im sure Hammersmith will take the roof off for Phil thats for sure!! The response at these Lizzy shows is just amazing!!

I agree, Gorum should lay off the FX.. Sykes always plugs straight into his Jose modded Marshalls dry and his tone wipes the floor with Gorams recently!!

I haven't seen Sykes since 1984 with Whitesnake! They opened for Quiet Riot!

How was the show? I would've loved to have seen John live with Whitesnake or Blue Murder..

That show kicked ass! The show was in Milwaukee, WI, I was only like 15 at the time and I remember Sykes playing a black Les Paul, I really went just to see Whitesnake more so than Quiet Riot! That show blew away the newer commercial version of Whitesnake in '87 with Vandenberg and Cambell!

I hated the lineup with Vandenberg and Campbell in 87.. Coverdale threw away the best part of that band when he fired Sykes!!

I have a couple bootlegs from 84 and 85 era Whitesnake with Cozy Powell, Neil Murray, John Sykes and David Coverdale. They were such a good lineup!

You didn't like all that overused chorus?

:D

I just never rated Viv or Adrian in Whitesnake, or Vai too. The only lineups i have ever really enjoyed aside from the early days, was the Sykes lineup or the Aldrich/Beach lineup. The others couldnt come close IMO!

I couldn't agree with you more, I saw those shows too and they sucked ass, especially the Vai one!

The Vai era i disliked the most to be honest with ya, i just never felt that he fit that band well at all. Im just glad Whitesnake have got a great lineup now with Doug who can nail all the Sykes style stuff!!

Ok its the morning after the show and my ears have finally stopped ringing!! It was so freakin loud, louder than the other Lizzy shows i have been to in the past. No wonder Sykes has tinnitus lol..

Man they were absolutely onfire!!! The crowd were going crazy for em too, so i think that just boosted their playing even more. They played the entire Live And Dangerous set, and it was so great hearing John Sykes tearing it up on the solos. The last 2 Lizzy shows, all you could hear was Scott Gorham's amps and Sykes could barely be heard.... Not this time :) John Sykes's amps must have been cranked on 10, because he was much louder than Scott who was playing through a wall of amps!! Also they had Tommy Aldridge on drums which just made the set a whole lot better for me.. Tommy's my alltime fav drummer. He did a long drum solo in the set which is amazing as always!!

As for gear.. John's rig was just 2 4x12 cabs either side (no grill and front loaded speakers) and in the middle he had the roadcase with the 2 Jose modded Marshalls. He only used the top one, and the whole night he just plugged straight in with no pedals or FX. His tone was the heaviest Marshall tone i have heard, not kiddin. Even with all the gain switches cranked on my Cameron, it couldnt get the kinda gain his Jose was :scared:

Scott had a whole wall of amps behind him with Marshall and Engl 4x12 cabs (6 of them). Ontop of the cabs sat a JCM900, a modded JMP which he normally uses, and an Engl Blackmore. He also musta had some FX in the rig behind his amps, because his tone was drowned out in it!! At some points during solos, the soundman boosted his levels up, but it still didnt cut thru all that well unfortunately!

Overall, i would say its the best gig i have been to all year! They really got the crowd working, and played tighter as a band than they ever did. Also John's voice is every bit as good as it always was, he sang his ass off even while playing harmony lines!! If Phil was watching down on them last night he woulda been fuckin proud!!!

Anyone who missed them on this tour... make sure you catch em next time!!! :rawk:

Sounds like you had a great time! I'm glad you survived the night! I passed on Ozzy last night, he played here but I have no desire to see Sakk play with him any more nor do I think he can even sing live!

I think i agree there, im not big on Zakk nowadays, and Ozzy wasnt that great when i saw him in 2002.. cant imagine what hes like now lol!

The TL gig was really great man, even though it was deafening :D

Thanks for the review Dan! No kidding that must have been killer with Tommy A. and John Sykes. He's probally my personal fav player ever not to mention his song writing and singing.

Both his Jose Marshalls are 50 watt JCM 800 2204 right? Have you heard his Bad Boy Live album - how did his tone compare?

Hey Mike,

Those Jose's are actually the non master volume 4 input models. Not 2204s but actually 1987s! They have been modded completely though so no doubt they have a master volume now!

He used the exact same rig as the Bad Boy Live cd, but his tone was miles better than the cd. Smoother on the high end, and not as harsh and grainy sounding, and also not as scooped. The Bad Boy Live cd was very poorly mixed and mastered IMO, i dont like the sound or mix on that cd at all...

One of the guys here remastered it to make it sound better and it really improved the overall mix and sound! Think it was RandyVanSykes but i cant be sure...

Nice review, Dan. I'd love to see Sykes playing live.

Hes amazin live! John Sykes and also Doug Aldrich are by far my two favorite players to watch live... they both have the most massive tone, they both have the best old LP's, and they both have incredible vibrato/feel

You need to catch John live sometime and you also must see Doug with Whitesnake!!
