Hi,

since I am very new to Egnater modules (sorry, if this was answered in other threads, I didn't find it):

The EG5 module is often mentioned in threads, but I couldn't find anything on Egnater's website about it. Is the EG5 the same as the MHG- module?

Ist it high gain and to what does it compare (style of music)? Does EG5 means, it is more gain than EG3/4?

Since I don't know EG3/4 - do you consider EG3/4 as a high gain module or what is it like?

I would be happy for a short information.

Cheers

They're both VERY high gain, but the EG5 is definitely higher.

The EG3/4 is smoother, darker, and more compressed

The EG5 is brighter, more open, and more aggressive.

They both overlap a little bit.

Think of it kinda like this:

EG3/4 is to EG5, as Bogner XTC is to Soldano SLO(with more gain)

+1. The EG5 definitely has a Soldano flavor. Love it!

EG5: Upper mid bite.

EG3/4: Lower mid smoothness.

I must note, that I play in a band with Matt (EWSEthan). And when he used the EG5 and I used the EG3/4, he would cut much better than me. Mainly for rhythm playing.

For soloing, it's less of an issue.

For me, I didn't like the EG5. I found it to stiff and to have too much gain. I never had the gain above 11:00 for even the heaviset metal tones. I prefer high gain more in the Diezel realm, VHT, etc. Other than that, I am all Marshall flavor.

Any experience with the EG3/4?
How would you describe the high gain in the Diezel/VHT realm? Do you play Diezel?

Man,I thought the VHTs I played at Namm were the stiffest amps ever.

I agree. Well made, wide variety of tone. But very dry and stiff sounding.

Back to the EG3/4...

I do consider it high gain for sure.

Also, lots of people (including myself) have done the "tube board cap swap" on the EG3/4. Basically, swapping the big 1000pf 500V Silver Mica Capacitor that's between the two tubes, for a lower value. 500, 250, 100. (all at 500V). The lower the value, the less treble attentuation, and as a result, the mids and highs react differently.

It's relatively easy to do, and it's non-invasive - you don't have to dissassemble your module to do it. You just have to be very careful and precise. Use a desoldering braid, work slowly, don't burn/melt the PCB.

I've even gone down to 100pf on the EG3/4 (which is what the SL2 has). Very cool flavor with the 100pf. Doesn't sound at ALL like the EG3/4 anymore. Sounds like something completely different. Similar to the SL2, but with more gain, and different mids. A little more midrangey overall.

well the eg5 has two channels of pissed of hi gain madness.
the eg3/4 has a channel that sounds really good with lower gain settings, and that responds well to your guitars volume control (well both channels do). the eg3 would be a great base for a single channel amp: run it crunchy, back down on volume for cleans, and kick in an od for more mess.

baiscally, where eg3/4 has more dynamics, eg5 has more teeth.

on metal gigs i often run eg5 for riffing and eg4 for leads.
