RESIDENT ROCK PROFESSOR
I been listening to a lot of shrapnel artists. Who’s your favorite?
What’s the hardest to play ?
Who’s tones you love ?
I’m on a kick so I’m interested im what you guys think

Sadly, all amazing players, most had absolutely shit tone in their albums with Shrapnel. I would love to have seen what their studio looked like and whether the engineers and producers sort of winged it as they went. Some records were better than others but most of the time the production came up short.

But to contribute to the thread, I would say Vinnie Moore. Pretty sure he was shrapnel wasn't he?

Greg Howe is my favorite…also like Vinnie Moore, Paul Gilbert and Tony Macalpine….all those records had poor production, mostly terrible drum sounds.

Big Vinnie Moore fan but liked MacAlpine and Howe too.

I just rediscovered this dude's record ElectriGuitArtistry from the CandyRat label (2008). Killer player.

Vinnie Moore, Paul Gilbert, Darren Housholder for me.
I took lessons from Darren Housholder back in the day and he is by far the best guitarist I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I would add Jason Becker and Tony MacAlpine to your list and that would probably round up my top five Shrapnel guys.

Tony MacAlpine is maybe my overall favorite.
Jason Becker the most jaw dropping
Greg Howe the most tasty
Michael Lee Firkins had the best recorded tone
Paul Gilbert the most inspiring and iconically groundbreaking.
Your right about Becker . And just a kid then

I took lessons from Darren also. He plays in Rough Cutt now.

I have some stuff still buried in storage bins out in the garage. I used to be his last lesson on Saturday afternoons. Darren was extremely cool and my hour lesson sometimes would last a few hours because he would take his lunch and talk at some point during the lessons. He lived in Burbank and I think he still has the same home. I remember when he moved into that home from another place.

Man if there’s any way to copy some of those for me I would pay you for the trouble. I have some of Becker and Friedman’s handwritten lessons and it’s inspiring. I collect weird shit fr lol

I will need to look for that stuff. Years ago I made some copies and mailed to someone in Europe. Right now I am just trying to get past this week. My mom passed away Tuesday and one of my French Bulldogs has a spinal injury that just happened and we are supposed to keep him crated as much as possible for 4-6 weeks. It has been a nightmare already and we are just in week one. I have not even picked up a guitar recently. When I do go through those bins I will look for a few Jason Becker things I have also that I got from a friend in Northern California who used to take lessons from Jason. When I get to it and find the stuff I will copy it and send it for free. I used to be SO into it back in the day and played all the time. Not so much these days with work and life.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. My condolences. Having 2 Frenchies, I feel that pain too. I cringe every time one of mine jumps from top of couch. Godspeed!
