Ok so earlier this year I bought used and sold a single rectifier. I didn't like it I wrote it off because the tone was super hard to tame. A friend of mine owned one and it sounded the same and not to my liking. I tried it through a few different cabs but still didn't get a tone I liked. However yesterday I tried out an early 50 watt rectoverb playing at through a 1960 900 lead cab. And it sounded incredible sounded like a dual rectifier. Is there something I'm missing here? Is it just the Marshall cab and the gt12 75. Or is it the head itself?

Not sure but that Single Recto my friend also had one and it was the only Recto I have ever heard that I liked. Not only did I like it, i thought it sounded very very good. I can;t say that about any other Recto that i have played.

But I guess a cab and speakers could make all the difference.

Could be the cab and speakers, could be the tubes too. Some combinations just work.

I had a series 2 Rectoverb combo. I basically wrote it off back then as well. Now I have a 3 channel triple (non multi watt). I like the triple far better with the gear I have now.

U tried this thing through one of the best cabs ever... No wonder why u liked the tone so much. Never underestimate the power of a good cab!

Some say the rev 1 singles and rectoverbs sound better than the series 2. All I know is my series 2 sounds pretty amazing. It took me a little while to get comfortable with it, since I was used to a 5150. Much less saturation in the gain, easier to dial in a bad tone. Once you learn how the controls work together it becomes pretty easy.
Tube swaps help too. Kt77s, and some preamp rolling. I use an 83 Marshall 800 cab with g12t75s and wgs retro 30s. Comes pretty close to ty tabors tone on Dogman...

They don't sound super awesome at really low volumes, but when you get them cooking a little bit... So thick. I miss playing at band volumes, but there's no way the amp is going to leave my possession.

Seriously am thinking about getting it fja modded. Love the way they sound in his videos.

I'm telling you guys there's something different about this Rectoverb it's a series 1 but there's EL34s in it. The serial number is R5H-002xx it sounds like a dual rectifier and sounds good at all volumes. The clean channel sounds great too there's no way it's s normal Rectoverb.

Does it still have the stock Russian 2 preamp tubes? Or does it have something different?

If the owner put in the effort to swap to EL34s he may have experimented with other things as well.

Keep in mind the reverb Rectos tend to be a bit darker/smoother than the non-reverb versions.

I'm pretty sure they are the stock tubes I'm going to take a closer look tonight.

Come to think of it what if it has a bias mod how do I tell that?

Series 1 don't have a bias switch correct? You'd have to open it up or at least get a reading with a bias probe.

I've been told that you could put el34s in those amps without a bias so they cook hotter. Like I said after work I'll be able to check it.

Okay so I found a switch that says el34 6l6 I'll post pictures later definitely has el34 in it however I'm positive it's a series 1.

If it's a series 1 and has a bias switch it has been modded. If it's stock, it's a series 2. If you run 34s in the 6l6 setting they run super cold. 6l6 in el34 settings run hot, or so I've read.

Based on that switch you posted your amp has been modded to take either 6L6s or EL34s (safely). The Series II tube bias selector looks nothing like that in your pic. It is a black slider switch down by the speaker outs or FX mix knob. The user manual does a good job of explaining the differences.

I have a Series II Rectoverb head and I really like it. I can get all sorts of tones from it. I run EL34s too so that maybe part of it. I have JJ preamps and 5751 in V1 (sometimes the PI). 6L6s sound good too don't get me wrong. I run mine into a Mesa Trad with V30s.

I love the Clean tones. My reverb is borked so I removed the tank. I use an RV7 reverb pedal instead. Not sure when they made the change but pretty sure all Series II have a series fx loop.

I got mine for $490 at Guitar Center. I think it is a beast of an amp. Good luck.

I say cabs have more impact than people think. A friend of mine was signed and sponsored by peavey. He had access to some great gear but left them because he couldn't find the tone. Later I was testing some cabs and a friend grabbed a random amp(it was a peavey) the combo was unreal at the time, blew me away. Later we told that friend and when he heard it for himself it made him a believer. A lesson learned long ago...

I do completely agree the cab can dictate the tone more than you know however you need a good head for that cab also. I have had a few bad cabs over the years and a few good ones. Currently using this amp with my Avatar V30 cab sounds amazing.
