Do any of you guys use single coils with your SL? I'm trying to dial in a nice bluesy tone ala Audley Freed(Cry Of Love era) I'm still having a little trouble dialing in the SL. It seems to favor humbuckers more than single coils. I'm back and forth with using the bright boost on and off.

Would the BMAN be a better fit for me for the tones I'm going for?

Thanks,
Billy

Hey Billy,

I can't speak for anyone else. I haven't played singles for over a year (before my egnater stuff). I find that "most" of the modules sound better dedicated to a single channel. The BMan has a great clean channel A, and a really good channel B. The VX, opposite. The SL is one that has a similar reaction to eq (imho). So, I tend to use the SL A/B in a boost/solo capacity. Where as with the Bman, I never could get a tonal balance between A/B. I always leaned towards it being my clean channel (favorite clean so far) with a BB preamp when I needed overdrive.
Your mileage may vary.

I mostly use channel A with my BB Preamp. The BB is a good fit for the SL.

Wagster, I may have mentioned to you (or someone) that the tone of Audley, single coils is one of my benchmark tones (when playing a Strat). This is the baseline tone I try to get. B'man module channel B with an Xotic BB is the closest I have gotten. IMHO the Strat itself is a pretty critical component. You can hear in his playing on COL that it is a slinky, easy playing guitar. It took me a while and some luck to put together a guitar that gives that feel. It's very easy to play. Main thing was finding a Deluxe Player Strat 12" radius neck. It also really sounds like there is a honk in his speakers that may indicate V30 are in use. Not sure.

I play with high action and it's easy for me to get around on. I feel weird on a guitar with low action.

I can get those tones with a Plexi but I'm having a little harder time with the SL. It's sounds awesome with humbuckers. I need to play around with the bright switches a little more. The BMAN sounds like it's right up my alley.

If you ever do a rock gig, I think your combo should be Bman and SL. Just like the website says, they make a great 4 channel amp with similar voicing.

Also, I'm starting to think that I may just be not as picky as most of you guys here. I've never had a problem getting a tonal balance on any module's A and B channels. The T/D was by far the hardest to find, but it's definitely in there. IMO the SL and the VX are the easiest to find a sweet spot for both channels.

Agreed! The SL2 is also very workable in this regard.

I played my MOD50 through a Bogner 4x12 cab. Holly crap what a difference it makes with the SL. I'm getting what I've been looking for with this setup. I'll be buying an 4x12 Egnater cab next week. I guess there's really no substitute for a good old 4x12.

I just put a pair of Brimar 12ax7's in the SL. What a big improvement over the WA's and Tug-Sols. With the Bright Boost 2 and Bass Boost 1 engaged the SL sounds like an old Plexi. The Brimars make the treble sweeter and more musical. I wonder how a NOS RCA would sound in V1 of the DLX?

where to get and how much?
I won a $200 gift certificate from KCA tubes. $200 only got me 2 Brimar 12AX7's. I guess that's how it goes with NOS tubes. I would never have tried them if it were not for the giveaway. I was going to put them in my AC30 but they sounded so good in the SL that they are staying there.

This, my friends and neighbours, is insanity.

True but they were free. I guess it all comes down to supply and demand. They sound awesome and I bet you could find a ANOS for around $30-$50 if you looked hard enough.

On another note I'm also finding that I like Bright Boost 2. It adds more gain to the treble and gives the SL that old early 70's Marshall tude

Any recommendations on a "reasonably priced" alternative?

I don't get involved with the NOS tubes. I am quite happy using a "New New Stock" tube.

I try out Sovteks, EH, Tungs and rebrands like Mesa and GT. I'm quite happy with the tones I get with these tubes. Quite frankly, when you mix your guitar tone into a full band mix, the incremental difference in tone you might enjoy by using a NOS would likely be largely "lost in the mix".

Just my 2c.

I agree and disagree. If the tone inspires you to play then it's gonna sound better out front. I like to keep some good sounding NOS tubes for the studio where the difference in tone can be heard.

I've found good deals on used and new NOS tubes on TGP and other forums. I found a NOS Philips Holland ECC83 (awesome for AC30's) on TGP for $30. It blew away the Tung-Sol and JJ's.
