SL / SL2 question

I have a SL module that I love and I'm contemplating picking up a 2nd one or maybe an SL2.

I do not have an SL2, so I do not have 1st hand experience with how it sounds.

I believe (and I could be wrong) from a Plexi to a JCM 800 there is an extra gain stage added. I prefer the sound of a boosted plexi vs. a JCM 800; I'd rather have a tweaked module than one with an extra gain stage (I have no idea if I just made any sense there).

My questions: Is the SL2 basically just a natural continuation of the SL?

If I wanted a SL that "goes to 11 --just a little more" is the SL tweakable or is the SL2 going to get me there as-is?

Basically, the SL is perfect, but I'd like to have another just like it with a tad more gain on tap.

I've just been through this myself. I traded the SL back for the SL2. My perfect world would have been the B channel of the SL and the A channel of the SL2 in one module. It's like the A channel of the SL is a little too 'dry' (even all the way up on the gain) and the B channel of the SL2 is a little to 'wet' (for me it doesn't need to go past 12:00 on the gain). However, I settled on the SL2 because I'd rather have more than I need gain wise than not enough.

Peace,

Waldon

Really good question I think. I had the SL and traded it this last week for a COD. Thinking about getting an SL2. I agree with the wish to have an SL with a bit more gain. Hoping the SL2 gains "down" well. Sometimes a mod looses a little mojo when dialed too far down.

That's my concern, too. I've got the EG5 for super-gained out stuff and I use the SL Ch A for furry clean all the time. Ch B. is great for crunchy rhythm and some lead work, but a bit more gain on B would be the 9s.

In short, yes. :)

A tad more modern, a bit more ballsy and less woody, but playing the modules next to each other, it feels like a natural progession of tones.

Actually, I just like the SL a lot more, overall.

I prefer the EG 3/4 to the SL2 for stuff at that gain level.

I agree. I typically prefer the SL to the SL2, although they both sound great. You can have Jeff and Bruce mod your SL2 to fit your needs though. There is also Dave Friedman that can mod it as well.

A nice big 1000pf cap, in parallel with the other cap on the SL2 tube board turns it into a HELLA dark EG-something (6?). It's touch sensitive and modern as hell. interesting. amazing.

Never heard of that. Is that replacing the stock cap or running both caps? Is that what I hear is the EG-6?
I can't imagine because the EG-5 already has twice as much gain as the SL2!!! Too much gain in my mind. I could never get that mod past 10:00.

I added a 500pf in my Eg3/4 and it sounds great, a touch more cut - replaced my 1000pf.

Right now I find the SL2 perfect. Channel A around 2:00-3:00 on the gain and channel B around 12:00-2:00 on the gain

(for what it's worth). I've got both SL and SL2 - I find myself on the SL2 most of time. It "gains down" excellently, and cleans up really well. As you can imagine, it's hairier (certainly on the B channel), but the bottom is also tighter IMHO. It's gets plenty woody for me the way i set it... (especially with guitar turned down, front single coil pup, bluesy stuff...)

For reference, I play Suhr and Les Pauls with low output Suhr pups. I like to run my guitar vol at around 5 or 6 for most everything, and have gain for solo's on tap (that's why I got the SL2, I needed a "bit more" than the SL). SL2 is kind of similar to an SL + OCD.

I find myself on the B channel a lot, as it's "bigger". I still have my SL, tho I'm not sure why. I stuck it in my MOD50 the other night with the SL2, and still ended up on the SL2 (I think I'm just more used to it).

Hope this helps.
