SL2 vs. EG5...again?

Swore I saw a post on this, but after 13 pages of searching, I'll start another!

Can you guys please help me out? I recently acquired a M4 (courtesy of another forumite) with the T/D, VX (fan-freaking-tastic) and SL mods. I need a fourth--the high gainer.

My be-all end-all high gain tone is the Soldano SLO-100. Before you sell me on the EG5, I just need to rule out the SL2. (I do not like, nor have I ever liked, Mesa 1/2/3 Rectifier amps.) For tone reference, the type of sounds I'd like to go for is:

Van Halen - "The Dream is Over" (Pretty sure a Suhr CAE 3+ Pre prototype);

Extreme - "Warheads" (Soldano SL60);

Ozzy/Zakk - "No More Tears" (heavily layered JCM 800).

Will the SL2 B ballpark these tones or is EG5 the best bet? I really only hesitate because I also love "woody" distorted tones and I have heard the SL2 described that way more than once!

So many options, so little cash!! :)

OK, for VH and Extreme tones, the answer is definitely EG5. For No More Tears I think SL2 channel B will be better.

Im actually thinking of modding my SL2 to be two identical B channels. SL2 sounds bigger and thicker than EG5, but EG5 cuts like a razor blade (like an SLO).

SL2 feels springier too and warmer. Im pretty sure its my favorite module. Even in standard A/B config its great, but if you want to to match the gain available on EG5 (which is absurd to the point of feedback) then SL2 A will not do it for you.

Just an idea .

I honestly think the big part of the EG5 80<s tone is the Demartini voiced mids .

Could you not get Jeff to drop the eg5 midrange voice into the Sl2 but leave everything else the same

You know, I think the best solution for me may be to pick up the SL2 first, compare vs. the SL, and pick up an EG5 in exchange for the other one I least prefer (if needed).

Thanks for the replies.

The SL2 is a definite!!!EG5 I personally love it,but it took time to dial in and I run her hard and is definitely on the top of my list!Highest freaking gain I've ever heard :D bone crushing!

SL2 is just impossible to beat for me. EG5 is great for cutting leads, but for nice thick rhythm and all around not over the top high gain I go with SL2 every time. That module is just magic.

I prefer the EL2 for rhythm and also for leads, is thicker and sings better. The SL2 sounds bigger to me. If I am playing VH, Led Zep, Metallica, Ozzy, Tool, Alice in Chains, the SL2 does it well - those guys used a lot of Marshalls. The EG5 is more SLO and I was never a fan so maybe that is partly why I can't get into it and I also can't get the gain past 10:00 on A and past 9:00 on channel B so I may be trading for an E-Rec.
I thin you can cover more ground with an SL2 and an E-Rec. Leads are stiffer on the EG5 and rhythms can be punchy and tight/focused but not as big and full like the SL2. I like a tone that engulfs you, not cuts your head off like a knife.

I have a MOD 100 which takes three modules.
My three goto modules are the BMan, SL2 and Erect. They cover alot of ground!
While I like the EG5, the SL2 has crunchier mids and is alot fuller sounding than the EG5.

Given your tonal preferences, I think the SL2 will be too smooth for you.

It's too dark to sound anything like a Soldano. It's not bright like an 800 either.

Get the EG5. Roll back the gain and treble on EG5 chB, and you're in the SL2 ballpark

That" what my M4 looks like until I get the Cod back:D

Try this, Jason's EQ...mixed with mine.

Bass boost on 2 (Really fattens it up!)
No Treble boost
I like gain around 10:00-11:00
Bass 10:30
Mids 2:30
Treble 12:00 - 2:30
I keep the power amp bass and presence around 10-11:00.

The Erect won't have a chance with that :D I might be up for a second EG5

Wow so you guys are running Bass Boost on EG5? I need to try that. Its alwas cut great for me but always was thin compared to SL2. Im going to give this a go!

I like how the bass boosts aren't really THAT drastic on the modules. They're not like clicking on "MEGA BASS" or "BASS BOOST" on a Sony receiver or anything... just very nice and subtle, but it fills out the low end.

HUGE difference. Jason filled me into this! I was struggling with the EG5 then he mentioned the bass boost placed on 2 and the bass EQ dialed back to 10-11:00. Sooooo much bigger and thicker. Like a different module. I still don't use much gain on this thing, like 10-11:00 but I am curious how I like this next to the E-Rect or even a Pete modded XTC. The Bass boost actually takes into Bogner XTC territory to my ears. I always thought the XTC had huge lows and low mids and the Bass boost kind of adds some of that flavor...leads really fatten up!

I cant wait to try this tonight. Thanks guys. Ive always pretty much ignored the bright and bass switches. Not anymore!

Yes and it definitely thickens up with bass boost on, but I got so frustrated with all the buzzing noise (see my other thread) that I didnt mess around too long.

I think you guys are right though and that its probably the way to go.

i used my SL2 90 percent more than the EG5.EG5 is good for a slayer, metal sound.i play a jazzy blues mix and classic rock ,80's hair band heavy metal, neil young, acid rock sound with a touch of gratefull dead,funk..... im so confused lol
1st M4 (T/D, VX, COD, SL1)
2nd M4 (Erect, SL2, EG5)
Im looking for an EG3/4 and waiting on a pete modded red face XTC :D ;)
guess im going to need a Randall M4 or another Egnater M4
and whats this rumor about to many mods and getting rid of them :gethim:
i like the 1st m4 and rt2/50 in on cab and the 2nd m4 and rt2/50 into another cab or both in a stereo 212 cab. i like a clean sound with my lead or rhythm. just me i like the fullness and seems to give clarity. i think Edge from u2 does this along with a few others. i started doing this in the early 90's using my carvin quad x and my mesa mkIII (still have them both in use also). WHEW!!!!

I just ordered another SL2 (and BMan) after selling my original 3 months ago...

Maybe this time I'll keep it!
I don't think I'll ditch the EG5 quite yet--maybe save it and the VX for the E2?
