SL2X owners chime in: gain settings

I, like others, have noticed that the SL2X can get noisy when the gain is turned up (and I get the more-mids + more-treble + more-gain = more noise equation). The biggest change seems to be when going from channel A to channel B. If the gain on both is set to 3 o'clock, channel B has more of a background buzz.

I'm assuming this is typical and have worked around it by maxing gain B to 1 o'clock before the noise starts; this is still heavily saturated. I can set channel A to max gain and still only have the same amount of noise as B's 1 o'clock.

So I ask: how are your gain settings on the SL2X and how much noise do you find that you have?

I run mine with both gains @ 12:00 o'clock,
Bass @ 12:00 o'clock
Middle about 1:00 o'clock
Treble about 1:00 o'clock

both bass boost and bright in 0 position

No noise at all.

With all of my high gain modules (SL2x included) my gain never goes past 2 o'clock. Biggest reason for me is it gets too compressed and loses some dynamics. But it also gets noisy. And remember, if you want to use the bright switch most modules need the gain to be set below 3 o'clock or it won't even work.

If you want more gain, you can get more if you turn up the treble. I do that with my DLX module so channel B sounds more compressed for country chicken picken' stuff. This works really good with my EG3/4 or any dark module. When I turn up the treble it will sing. But if you find it's too ice picky you can use the bass boost to balance it out. I do that with my EG5.

Gain max to 1 o clock on channel A, channel B at noon.
Worked percet for me (mids 1 o clock).
Best

That's ABOUT where I have mine set - mine around 1-2 o'clock on A and B, mids around noon. This gives me 'kerrang' on A, then high-gain crunch on B.

Ok, this mod is the one that I'm having the hardest time dialing in. Not because it's hard to find a good sound, it's that I can't decide which ONE to leave it set to. Honestly, I could probably have 2 or 3 SL2X's, all set up differently and they'd all be usable.
I DID pull the C18/470pF cap because originally it felt too bright, but now I can't decide on that either and put it back. I'm going to stop messing with it, though; don't want to fry anything.

Then you've essentially gone from an SL2X to an SL2 (except that your BASS is slightly less than a stock SL2) . . .

I might pick up an SL2 when the lower-cost ones eventually come out and hear how they compare. Not modding this one that drastically.

I hear ya . . . I've got several things I could do to my SL2, but I really want to keep the one that I have stock (it's still completely virgin), and then pickup another SL2/SL2X to tinker with, keeping the stock SL2 for comparison . . .

BTW - I haven't heard anything on pricing as far as Egnater's new manufacturing line goes . . . have you heard anything that might give you an inkling as to what the new-production dual-channel modules will be priced at?

Nope, nothing yet. I'm good for a while now with this setup though. The VX, SL2X and the EG5 (arrives tomorrow) will keep me busy as my 'gain' mods. Feel almost guilty for not playing my Super Reverb in the last 2-3wks, but this is definitely the array of amp sounds that I've wanted.

I'm just looking forward to changing the EG3/4X in my signature. Here's a picture of what it looks like now - taken just the other day before it was shipped out to me yesterday    :

Whoa!
Is that the 'Soldano' mod? So it was an EG3/4X modded to a 'Salvado'?

Yup . . . Anthony can pretty much use any Egnater dual module as a donor module, except for the T/D (which would obviously include the T/T & D/D) and the COD. Not sure about the old TWIN and DLX modules either. But I'd have a hard time sending out any of my modules other than an EG3/4, EG5, or SL2/SL2X - these days it seems the other modules would be too hard to replace.

It took 9-10 days door-to-door when I sent the EG3/4X to the Czech Republic months ago . . . not sure if it'll be any longer or quicker on the return trip (?).

aaaaaoooooooooogghhh(homer simpson drool)... I sent my Friedman modded SL2 in before christmas to have Anthony work this up (along with a dual Matchvox). Had the single channel version and it became my favorite module of all - covers so much territory with both single coils and humbuckers. I think when Eggheads in the states start hearing some sound clips of this module he's going to have to open up an international express office...

patience my pet...

OK hugh what is this module all about :gethim:

I tried doing a search and found some clips, but there isn't alot of info.

I want details & some clips.

I haven't even heard it yet Eddie . . . it just shipped out yesterday so it probably won't even be here for a week or two. But here's what Anthony had to say:

  • Dual Egnater modules are not very common in Europe, so It took some time.
But now SOME of my modifications are now doable in Dual Egnater base too.
Dual Egnater modules are more versatile, of course.
They also have less space for additional features.

Compare this module with Single channel Salvado.
This new Twin channel lacks CRUNCH/OVERDRIVE switch. It is because crunch is "hardwired" to lower channel and overdrive to upper channel.
Tight switch is actually 3 position BASS BOOST switch (center position is tightest).
Bright switch is also 3 position. This is common dual Egnater feature.
So, we have almost the same versatility like on Salvado Deluxe module, but with advantage of remote switching between channels with separate GAIN and Master controls.
    Nice, I love it!

And i have to say thanks to Mr. Bruce Egnater for modular amp ideas, he is really genius!

This thread has been officially derailed, and to continue on with the Salvation Salvado Deluxe subject, here are a few clips i did when I had the single channel version (there are only 3 clips, I think you can access them all from this page - first time uploading to Soundcloud too). One of the first nights I had with it and just went through the settings from clean, crunch to overdrive. These clips don't really do it justice and I spent more time engineering the recording (been awhile) so there are a fair share of knuckles on the fingerboard. These were all done with a les paul but playing through it with a strat was equally enjoyable. I was getting a COD type tone but without the compression and hard attack I often feel with the COD. A more open tone, maybe a little more sag and articulation and still the great saturated gain.

Pretty sure that's all Doubleneck's fault . . .  Oh wait - that would be my bad! ;)
