I'm really interested in this whole slaving concept since lately I've had this overwhelming urge to slave my Uberschall. Anyway, I have some questions that I've run into since researching slaving that some of you may be able to clear up.

-I've heard some say it sucks because their is no output transfomer - speaker interaction. I don't get this because wouldn't the slave amp be interacting with the speakers?

-I've heard some say there are issues trying to get feedback. Is this valid?

-What would be your go to slaving amp (brand and tube or ss) and why?

Thanks,
Frank

I will assume that someone mentioned The speaker interaction because they were probably using slaving as a volume control and kept the amp low. If you crank up the slave amp you will get all the speaker interaction you need. Slaving is a great way to get a massive sounds out of your rig and its also a great way to make your effects crystal clear.

There are no issues trying to get feedback.. Im not sure where this info is comming from.

Ive used SS and tubes for a slave rig and Ive always came back to tubes. It just sounds and feels better IMHO.
My personal slave amp favorites are Mesa Boogie poweramps and/or VHT poweramps.

hope this helps

Thanks dude. That's what I was kind of already thinking but having never done it I just wasn't sure.

I agree... Ralphie gave me the idea for slaving my rig years ago, and its so addictive!! Once you hear the tone you can achieve with this method.. theres no going back :D

Ralphie,
What pros and cons did you find between the Mesa and VHT power amps? Or is it pretty negligable since it's only being used as the slave?

Would the traditional Mesa 2:90 or 2:100 and VHT 2902 be a good place to start or are higher powered amps like the Coliseums and 2150's where I should be looking?

Thanks again,
Frank

2:90 would work great or possibly a Strategy 400 if you can find one for a good price and have the cash! The Strategy has better headroom i believe! :)

VHT is about the only tube power amp I'd want.
That said I'm a huge fan of the MosValves for slaving.
Also, there's always the option to run wet/dry or w/d/w if one wants more typical amp interaction.

Frank!
The Differance between the Mesa and the VHT was more in feel and you can hear a differance in tone depending on what tubes are loaded in the slave amp. That said, it's a noticeable differance but not a HUGE differance which would make me pick out the cheapest tube amp that you can get for a slave amp.
I agree with Ed about the Mosvalve. It sounds great and you can get them for a steal but I still prefer a tube amp. (FWIW, A mosvale is a solid state amp that is trying to emulate a tube amp...sounds good, wont break the bank abd saves you money on tubes but I still dig tubes!

Dan pretty much nailed it. With that said, Id look for the cheapest Mesa that you can find (like a strategy 400) Sounds killer and I also forgot to mention that the tube peaveys are a great bang for the buck slave amps!! I believe Vic over at Mojave ampworks uses a peavey for his slave rig and it sounds killer!

If you are on a real budget..... Mosvalve all the way.

Dude, I'm not on a budget and I use the MosValve. :)

I started out using a Mosvalve and I prefer my 2:90 much more. It Just works better for me although if I was to use a slave rig for gigging again, Id probably rethink carrying the 2:90 because it is heavy as hell lol!!

Im currently using a Peavey Classic 60/60 tube poweramp, which sounds great for Slaving! In the future though im going to try and grab a Strategy 400 to replace the Peavey, just for the huge headroom. Obviously the higher wattage you can go, the better.. i dislike hearing breakup from the Slave amp!

Back in the day I had a Rivera TBR3 and a TBR 5 for that and I dug how they sounded. But I need another 100 pinuds of weight like I need to listen to Jimi play EVH. :)

No. But the bass player in Saigon Kick was a good buddy. Actually caught up with him first time in 15 years a few month back.

Awesome!!

I just remember checking the band out live and the guitar player Jason bulier(sp?) Had a massive sound. He was using a TBR ! I remember that series sounding very boogie like but with more balls and less sag :D (for lack of a better description...trust me!)
