Smoothing out an SLX?

I really like my m4 setup: t/d, vx, sl and SLX. The SLX has the right amount of gain, grit and balls for me. The only thing is that sometimes it can be a little harsh.

Are there any easy mods to tame it down a bit? I haven't played a eg3/4 so I can't really compare, but ideally I'd like to tame the harshness just a tiny bit (and I do mean only a bit; I still want some of that bite...)

Component changes? Tubes to try? Thanks!

Geoff

I assume you mean the SL2X, right?

How about reverting it back to the plain ol' SL2? That should do the trick.

Haha whoops! Yeah that's what I meant - it's been a while since i looked at all the module names.

I've never actually played an sl2... - how would I mod my sl2x to get there? Maybe I could go somewhere in between the two for starters

perhaps trying a tube like a JJ or ruby, one that at least to me, smoothes the top end a bit and rounds it off. might be a good cheap place to start.

Sorry to ressurect this one, but is the 'X' mod the same on all X-modded modules?

i.e. do the instructions for un-X'ing an EG3/4X (in the link above) apply to the SL2X?
I'm guessing the three parts modify bass, mids and treble, correct?

Thanks,
Buck

+1 that was what I did and worked pretty well for me!

Ok, looked at my SL2X tonight.
Based on the info in the link above, I'm guessing the C5 part of the mod affects the bass; what does 470pF cap (C18) and the 100pF cap on the vertical board do? Which one affects mids and which affects treble?

EDIT: nevermind - read elsewhere that C18 affects the mids and the cap on the vert board affects the treble.

Thanks

the 1000pf @ C2 trick is like the dark, signature Eggy tone.

do it.

I prefer the tight attack of the X caps with the C2 cap keeping it nice and dark.

How is it effed up?

Mine is dialed to rock. It's like an EG5 with 85% of the gain, and a little more Marshall punch.

What is the deal?

Boy everyone is on nerve's end lately, just meant don't know why you would mess with an already great sounding module. That's all.

Love & kisses

Actually, no. The EG3/4 comes stock with a 1000pF cap at C1 on the vertical tube board, and it is changed to a 100pF as part of the "X" mod; so on the EG3/4X you would need to change the 100pF back to a 1000pF in order to return it stock (as stated in the instructions of the post you referenced).

However, the SL2 already comes stock with a 100pF cap at C1 on the vertical tube board, so on the SL2X you SHOULD NOT change this cap to a 1000pF . . . 100pF is already the correct (stock) value, and it should not have been changed as part of the "X" mod . . .
