So I tried an Ubershall

I went into the local shop here that is a Bogner dealer. I went in with some hopes that I could compare this to my Einstein for tone. What the hell was I thinking! Seriously, what is the hype with that amp? The one that I tried was really not a great sounding amp. The mid sweep on the thing is hideous. I found the gain to be somewhat brittle, if one was to describe it? The thing is, I almost bought one of these instead of the Diezel and I am so glad that I didn't make that mistake. They build a very nice amp but it's just not what I expected.

Now on the other side of the coin....the Ecstacy 101B......that is one NICE amp. If I was to get one, that would be it. I was impressed with the tone from it. It doesn't have the tightness that the Diezel does though which is something that I would miss. The only reason I went in to try it was because a friend was ranting and raving about the Ubershall amp. I didn't like the 2x12 Bogner cab. Must be the V-30s that I just don't like. The 4x12 Ecstacy cab was very nice, though! It had the Greenbacks in there. Crisp, clear and punchy.

Still, I've got some news for my friend and it begins with a "D" and ends with a "L". He's never tried one so I'll have to let him try my amp and then let him make his comparisons. Just trying to help him out as he is buying soon.

;)

Anyone else try the other "German" flavors? What did you think?

I think Uberschall is one of the best amps ever made, if it matters to you.

However, like everything else, it may be not the right tool for the application. For me the ultimate tone is Diezel & Bogner mixed.

Here is a clip of Uber & VH4 mixed, I'm totally digging it.

I have played Ubers and they are really dependent on how you dial them. You can dial them to sound like ass, but you can also dial in some ridiculously heavy sick gain sounds.

One of those amps you dial with your ears, not with your eyes.

I love my Uber, but you really need a boost otherwise it's just too loose. I do like my XTC better. My Herbert is my favorite though. ;)

Ya....we tend to agree to disagree on things, eh?
:D

http://www.dizero.com/studio/doubleamp3.mp3on on it being a well built amp. I know that Bogner builds great gear.
For some reason, this thing just didn't have it. I didn't find the gain as hellacious as everyone says it is.

Nicely done! Sounds great!

Perhaps this one just wasn't all there. Could have been a tube issue as well....you never know. I'd be more inclined to think it was that, if anything. We've all seen that happen before.

How else does one dial in an amp? That is exactly what I did with this one.
No issues with the 101B though, solid right from the startup.

Anyhow...I wasn't trying to be critical of the amp, just posting my trial with it.

I'll be honest with you, the first time I've tried Uberschall I didn't like it too. The reason: I had the wrong guitar & wrong amp settings. Once I've learned how to dial it my opinion changed 180^. Uberschall has one serious control, it's called presence, it works very different from other amps. The secret to the Uber is its presence knob IMO.

Right now I'm totally for double amping, dirties, cleans. Now that I'm comfortable with my amps I have the guts to mix them & the combinations just make my head spin. 101B/VH4 sounds killer too, both cleans (man you have to hear that!) & dirties. Blue channel mixes with ch4 VH4 SOOOO GOOOD. I haven't got enough time to double 2 Diezels together yet, but I hope that will happen sometime in near future.

:D

You've got that right. My cabinet of choice is Bogner OS 2x12, I've sold every other cabinet I had. :D

Just out of curiosity: what guitar/pickup were you running & what amp settings did you have dialed if it's not a top secret?

The Bogner 2x12 cab is very nice, no doubt. I love the look of it and the oversizing. I'd just probably rather have it with something other than Vintage 30s OR perhaps a mix of the V-30 and a greenback. I just don't like that v-30 speaker as much, myself. Again, everyone's ear and approach is different.

For the guitar, I was using one of the Ibanez Jem V7 guitars. Basically, a white alder body with DiMarzio evolutions. I didn't bring either of my guitars with me. That same guitar sounded beautiful through the 101B and the matching 4x12. I've heard though that the Ubershall 4x12 cab is very nice as well. Hey....I may go back and try it again when I have some time.

Still good to hear that you have had some great success with it.

What nbarts said, the presence control is the key to the amp, roll down the presence and you get completely different sounds from it. The settings you end up with will look weird, that's where the ears/eyes distinction comes in.

Plus, for a "death metal amp" IMO the amp sounds better with less extreme gain settings on the dirty channel. Still heavy, but not stupid, unusable heavy.

OK, here is my first attempt mixing VH4 with Herbert. My ears are fried right now, but I think it's kicking.

Have I said that Herbert is my favorite amp yet? :D

So far for me the pickups that worked with Uber were JB, EMG81 & 498T, so to sum it up something with high output & bright.

I'm with you with v30s sounding not that good by themselves, that's why I mix them with EVMs. I run 2 2x12s instead of one :D

That sounds like an interesting combo! You always hear great things about the EVMs!

Nice clip! The Herbert rocks!!!! Hell......any Diezel rocks IMHO!
;)

This little JVM combo that I have really roars though. I changed up the stock EL34s and the V1-2-3 tubes and it took away a lot of the buzziness and made it sound very crisp!

I'll have to run a few clips myself as well.

Mix of VH4-CH4 & Herbert CH2+ on each channel. Check the "clips" thread for more info.

My $.02. I absolutely love the Uber, but if the first time I played it was in a store without much time to really tweak I would've hated it. Unlike the herbert and Vh4 that took me all of 5 minutes to get a killer tone, it took me a couple of days to really start getting the feel of it. Like others have said, the trick is in the presense but I'd say the mid controls too. Figure out how those work together and you're in business. In fact the presence seems to add some gain. Seems weird, but I'm not the only one who's noticed. Anyway, give it another shot if you have some time. It's very different than the Diezels, but equally cool in its own right.

Hey Nbarts and any other experienced readers,

Newbie here with my first post. Looking at cabs and was wondering if you use the open back or closed back Bogner OS 2x12s?

Thanks

NBarts, that was some serious KILLER tones \m/

Thanks.
I think I'm moving to industrial metal & synthetic guitar tones. Conventional guitar tones do nothing for me anymore. :D
