So many Klon clones and variants out there..

There's no excuse not to have great boosted tones anymore. While there are a ton of other great options, the Klon based circuit is at the top for boosting a dirty channel or crunching up a clean channel. I saw this list this morning and it is crazy how many options we have nowadays. I have the Mojo FX Sacred Cow and I really like it. I find they work fantastic with Marshall style or Friedman style circuits. If haven't tried one, close your eyes and pick anything on this list, you might be pleasantly surprised. ( Just don't pick the first one if you value your $)

I have a Ceriatone Centura. I changed out the stock diodes for NOS germanium and it’s really good. I also have a VFE Merman which is crazy versatile.

Lots of clones. My favorite is the Rimrock Mythical Overdrive. It’s a lightly tweaked version not exact, better. Check it out on TGP. It’s cork sniffer approved.

Another good one, i just watched the A/B comparison. So close.

VFE Merman has additional options, also cool. I like the Mojo because of the added versatility of a lean/fat switch and of course low noise. So much good stuff out there.

Cool, thanks for posting this! I had posted a while back asking about this very topic, so having something to bookmark is great :) Cheers!

The other reason I recommend the Mythical overdrive is the construction and quality

Recently got the newest version of V(e) or VFE Merman. Borrowed a friend's Rockett Archer Icon to compare them. The Archer cleans up more....the Merman is way more versatile and can get much more aggressive.

The original version of the Merman was much closer to a Klon....this new version is Peter's idea of what the circuit can be. Way more range and control.

I have this for a while.

I have the "non-Klon" Keeley Oxblood but not currently on my pedalboard. Need to put it back on there. I should look into some Klon pedals since Keeley's is just based on it.

Had a Soul Food when they first came out for about a month. At the time either new pedals could hang with my Koko or not. The Soul Food could not hang so it went. I should have at least one klone flavor on hand though so will keep my eyes open for one.

The bottom two look more like computer boards. Are either of the diode options on the switch Ge?

I often use my Klone to make a clean sound more lush/lively.

yoi can choose the standard 1N34 or the Russian D9E for the up position and either a germanium or silicon variant for the second spot.

PCB doesn't bother me. As long sit sounds good with my setup.

You posted that gut shot in your original review way back when.
I ordered one the next day.
It's still my fave Klone. My clipping switch is: up = nos 1n34s, and down = Telefunken OA128.

Wampler Tumnus is pretty good, as is the Archer Ikon. I also have a JHS modified Soul food that's OK, but the Mythical OD is the best I've tried so far.

I have not tried the CeriaTone one, and I have a Merman on the way, so we'll see.....

Here is my Centura with NOS diodes. I built it a few years ago.

The diodes are ECG109 both with .27 forward voltage.

You do nice work. That looks really well done.
Very much like the Mythical OD, and def not like the other 2 with the surface mount shit in them. The jacks on the KTR would make me nervous.

I'm going to have to look into getting one of these Ceriatone units.
I'll probably just get Ceriatone to build it and swap out the diodes when it arrives.

A couple of questions for Dave or anybody else familiar with this: How important is it that the diode's forward voltage matches, and how many did you have to test to find the pair you used? If I'm going to grab some NOS diodes on ebay for example, do I need to grab like 10 to make sure I get a pair that will work?

I’m not sure how important it is, but I made the assumption matching forward voltage is important so out of the 5 I got from eBay, two were almost identical. I guess I got lucky. I do know the diodes have other properties like capacitance, etc.
