A cool story about the Brown Box, happened to me just this morning. I still live overseas but where we have 120V power in the compound. We just got moved to a new house yesterday. I am up at 3:00 AM and decide to plug in an amp, the UA OX instead of a cab and play though the headphones. Kicked on the Furman and plugged stuff in. The Furman showed 130V. WTF? Our old house is only a KM away and we gain 11V from 119 to 130. I remembered having one these I had bought months ago, still in the box and had to rummage around to find it. Plugged it in, plugged the Furman into it, set it to 120 and less 10% reduction and voila.....117V. Try running an amp with primaries for 117V and see what happens to B+ voltage when you hit it with 130V. All of a sudden, your bias is hot as hell and shit starts popping.
Anyway, you may not need it for this sort of thing stateside. But, its a good tool to keep in the toolbox to give you steady voltage to your amps and other gear and keep the voltage at 117, where US power transformers are design to run. So, they aren't just to brown your amp, but keep a steady voltage.
