Solo Boost for Pink Taco

Hey Nice People. So I am making the assumption that the majority of guitar players here have a regular volume and a solo volume. So, why do so few amps have a solo boost? I don't want a boost pedal or overdrive in front of the Pink Taco because this just increases the gain. Is there a mod that can be done or do I have to put a boost pedal in the effects loop?

Thanks

You can MOD it. Dave can mod it. You need dual master volumes so each master pot is set to a different level to give it just a little more "volume" :)
Not sure if the Pink Taco transformers, but the main issue is a power source for the channel switching of the pot. If the transformer has taps for it, you can use it. Else, you can use the heaters and tap off of it as long as the PT can handle the extra load. Lastly, you can add a seperate transformer and drill it into the side of the case so it doesn't affect front, back, and bottom and when the power switch is thrown, power the second PT with a discreate switching circuit. You're gold! :)

You can get a 12V C/T 450mA transformer from Radio Shack for $7.49 - http://www.radioshack.com/radioshack-12 ... er&start=5

How about a micro amp in the loop. Very simple. Or something like that.

Just put a clean boost in the loop. I use a Barber tone press in my Smallbox as a Class A style solo boost. I also hear Dan Gower is the man in England for mods.

Or do what Dave said.

I use an EQ Pedal in the loop of Small Box works great. Maybe Ill give the Micro Amp a try.
Small Box is an awesome amp.

This. I use a CAE Line Driver (MC401) at about 8db and it works perfectly as a solo boost in the loop. Ultra clean and transparent.

I just had my amp tech make my FX loop switchable. Using a simple Marshall 2 knob switch pedal, I can now switch channels and switch the loop on/off.

Put a Xotic EP booster in the loop, and you have your volume boost when you switch on on the loop. :-)
I can't understand why Friedman doesn't make this a standard on any of his pricey amps....

Because there really is no point. The loop is a low impedance one and there is no losses in cable length at all.

Once you get used to running fx loop cable, its really the best way to go. I run a two boosts in mine. One for slight rhythm volume boost and an MXR/CAE line booster running at 18V for my main Lead boost. Its fat as hell and sounds great. Plus WAY more control cuz its at my feet. I run ALL my Loop fx through a Loop switcher so I can turn them all on at once.

Empress ParaEQ pedal is the best you can use and you can even tweak without altering your main tone.. or a suhr koko boost..

I run a Micro Amp in the loop, works perfectly. I do the same with my BE100 as well.

Is this a clean boost in volume only? I like gain and volume boost for my solos

Personally, I'd use an EQ. You can better shape the tone to your liking, and use it's level control to bring more volume. EGD Tone Job, Wampler Equator, a simple GE-7, clean boost with EQ like an Xotic AC/RC Booster.

I use a multiFX unit, so I just bump the volume on my lead patches and use in preset mode. All my rhythm presets are at 80, and lead presets at 85. Simple.

My PT that I modded quite a bit. Clean Channel, Dual Masters on both channels, Dual Gains on gain channel, switchable loop, a bunch of tonal options and some circuit changes. I have a midi jack in back and a 4 button footswitch so that everything is footswitchable.

The thing you run into when you want a volume boost is, you're really not dealing with a lot of clean headroom on these. The claimed 20W must be measured at a very high THD, it's really not that in any way we're used to evaluating. You're not going to get Deluxe Reverb levels of clean volume on these, even with one stage right to the phase inverter. If you go louder than the available headroom, you'll just clip the power section harder instead of getting more volume. If your band practices/plays at reasonable volumes, it can be fine; if you are already clipping the power section, a boost will always just be a gain boost.

I've found that, unless I'm playing fairly quiet, the cleans aren't going to be that clean. I have another one that I did where I made the 2nd stage footswitchable, so the 2nd channel is like a slightly modded Plexi instead of a 'clean' channel, and that works better in a lot of ways for these, given the available power.
