Hey guys,
I recently compared my 2002 VH4 (serial 020291) to one made in 2006 and they sounded really different. Mine had 6L6 winged C in it, the other one 6550 tubes. Mine sounded more 'classic' (more mids, more "80s-sound"), the other one more modern. The weird thing was that they had extremely different amounts of gain: His 6550 driven one only needed gain on 12 o clock to sound like my 6L6 one with gain on maximum.
My question now is: Are the tonal differences only caused by the different types of tubes or are there also differences in the way the VH4 was built inside. Did certain capacitors for example change that changed the sound etc? Or is that lack of gain caused by the fact that I should exchange my tubes in the near future?
Thanks, Hans
