I have to admit, I really love Splawn amps. I have never owned one but would love to know which module you all think would get close to that Splawn tone? I am thinking maybe the SL2X?

I thik the QuickRod is one of my fav's.

Thoughts?

Probably the SL2X . The Friedman brown Eye has the very quick and clean bass response that the Splawns have though. But it would basically be in that ball park. A good part of the splawn sound comes from the transformers and power section. They really have titanic output trannys .

I believe Egnaters have the same trannys.

idk man, i heard that the quickrods are boomin good, but i as well heard that those nitros have a mean ass tone as well. i am thinking about getting a nitro pretty soon

I had a Splawn Pro Mod back in 2004-ish. I liked it. It was very loud - loudest amp I ever had.

If I recall, it had 3 channels, clean crunch & lead. crunch was VH drop dead legs tone. Lead was just more gain on the
same sound. I bought it specifically to sound like VH and that's exactly what it did. Once I got over that, I sold it and moved on.

Modular wise, I'd have to say some sort of SL2/Sl2x. Splawn was very aggressive in midrange.

I have A/B'd a quick rod (made in 2006) and the SL2. This was done pre SL2x. My buddie still has the Quickrod so I should do the A/B again. We used the same cab (25th ann Marshall 4x12 with greenbacks). We decided the Quickrod has more Jangle and sparkle but the SL2 was more punchy and powerful. I bet the SL2X has both the punch and the sparkle now. If I get cahnce to A/B again I will let y'all know.

Cool, let us know! I also think the SL2 is very punchy and powerful.......I do believe it has the same power amp as the Splawns though. I have the SL2X now but have yet to try it at rehearsal volumes so I have no idea if it retained its punch.

Didn't the upper mid tweak shift the mids or did it just make the upper mids stand out more....hence taking away the low mid punch. Maybe just tightening the SL2 would have been the trick.

Honestly I like the SL2X more than the stock SL2. I have not notived any decrease in low mid authority just the addition of jangle and sparkle in the upper mids. I hope to jam with my splawn buddy this weekend. Will let you all know how A/B round 2 goes.

I know the stock SL2 has been my favorite module with the band for a while now. Seemed to be warm, punchy, clear, cutting, near perfect. That is with my Les Paul, PRS, SG, it likes em all. Now, I have not been with the band since converting to the SL2X. At home it seems a bit thin and leads not as thick but I need to hear it with the guys! What has been your experience? Keep us up to date on the Splawn comparison. :)
