My buddy just got a Spider Valve 112. He is complaining that is squeels on some patches, mainly on the high gain patches. Like a high pitched feedback is the way he describes it. I think some JVM owners were complaining of the same thing.

Is this common? He is standing about 10 feet in front of the amp and is facing away from it. Should I loan him some preamp tubes to see if that helps?

If the squealing goes away when he turns down the guitar volume, then I don't think it's the tubes. Then it's probably more of a too much gain/pickup problem.

ditto. the SV does have a built in noisegate tho, you may wanna try that first.

When the channel volume is way up and the master goes up it has a tendency to squeal. Usually with the channel on noon and the master on noon no problem. That said the combo was more prone to it then the head. Which makes sense since the tubes get rattled around more in the combo.

I am wondering if the issue is also due to the pickups in his carvin guitars. Does anyone know if they are wax potted?

He tried another cheap guitar with dual humbuckers and it didn't squeel at all. I will have him just plug into my 112 extension to see if that helps (should help if there is tube rattle from it being a combo).

With my SV halfstack, I play guitars with various pickups -- some squealed under high gain and others didn't. I bought an ISP Noise Decimator to run in front of the amp and it cured it once and for all.

The only time I had a squealing problem with it was when I still had the stock Epi pickups in my LP.

After I changed them for SD's, it didn't give me any trouble, but I also didn't run the gain much higher than I did on the patches I had saved on it. I'd only go so far because it's start sounding fizzy :(

Sorry to hear he's having that kind of issue, but, when I had it, it was fine. I never changed the tubes though - heck, I don't even know what the guts look like...

I tried one again the other day, and it would instantly feed back if I took my hands off the strings when I was close to the amp, even on the lower gain settings, and I wasn't playing it very loud. It was the head.

Actually that physics...not the head. Close proximity and hands of the string=squealage!

The Seymour duncans we probably wax potted and the stock epiphone pickups were probably not. That is why I am thinking wax potting his carvin pickups is worth a try. I have the double boiler and wax to do it. I figure we can try his 07 Carvin 1st, since if I ruin the pickup we can just order another new one.

Also he won't give my homebuild copy of a mesa recto 112 cab with a V30 in it back :gethim:

I'm talking instant ear piercing squeal. Even when I have my amps turned up all the way, I can still stand in front of them without that happening. Maybe something was wrong with it, but nothing else suggested that, and it struck me as pretty odd.
