St Rock IR vs Fryette PS100 with Software

I have both but I am experience something strange. The st rock with even stock IR to my DAW sounds really good. But the PS100 line into the DAW with Lybria software and the same IRs as the St Rock and even a bunch of purchased ones doesnt sound as good.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
 
The St Rock piece makes a big deal of the load it presents to the amp; you might be preferring that load to whatever the Fryette is doing.
 
I believe the line out on the PS units are "frequency compensated"....which probably means they have a low pass filter applied


It would be interesting to compare the sound of the line out to the sound of the fx send
 
I don’t know what’s happening but I want to use the fryette because I hear it’s safer. Especially for old marshall’s. So I want to transfer to that.


What are my options to mess with the load or anything non software yet. In software I can’t make it close either.
 
im willing to bet it’s just plain better :) the St rock is the best on the market along with the driftwood loadbox. My buddy sold his suhr the next day after he heard my driftwood loadbox compared to his suhr’s… all load boxes aren’t created equal…

Your options are the switches on the front of the PS; that's all you get.

Otherwise like I said, try using the fx send of the PS instead of the line out and see if you like that better

I just bought the driftwood. Def nice stuff!

I heard only the Fryette and Suhr stuff was giving the correct load. Im not saying this is true because I dont know. But I listen when people who know say things. Nobody ever mentioned the St Rock in the "not safe" though. Just that it wasnt a Fryette or Suhr.


If someone here can look into the load and tell me it really is safe (even if st rock had a guy on here) then Id feel better. Because it really does sound better for recording. As an attenuator the PS100 is the best.

The PS has a switch that engages or disengages the filter it also has controls for high end and low end response that should be reflected on the line out. So the user does have some significant control at his disposal.

In general, the Fryette is a great load box. Since reactive loads have a limit to how variable their response is, differences between high quality ones are most likely more a matter of taste, than of quality. IMHO. I would certainly expect extremely good engineering from Fractal, Suhr, Fryette and a few of the others.

Oh nice, I didn't realize that. I have the original Powerstation which doesn't have any control for the line out

I tried flat and then boosting as well. How hot should I be sending line level to the interface? I am not overpowering it at all. I also have the volume down in silent mode but what about presence and depth? Are they active?
 
The power station switches, presence and depth knobs should work on the line out signal.


From the manual:

USING SILENT MODE
Silent Mode allows you to use the Power Station as a silent adjustable reactive load for quiet direct recor- ding or when sending a live amp signal to front of house with no speaker cab connected. In this mode it is not necessary to power up the Power Station. You don’t even need to plug in the power cord. The Voicing switches, Low Pass Filter switch, FX Send (along with the FX Level switch), and the Balanced and Unba- lanced Line Outputs all operate with no AC power applied.

I was contemplating ordering that St. Rock unit, until I had the common sense to not send my CC info to a company in Ukraine

It says voicing switches which I read as bite and whatever the others say. I didnt pay attention to presence and depth pots. Might be something to that.


As for sending payment to the Ukraine. I think I used paypal so I didnt need to give them my info.
