Both of these guys haven't released anything meaningful after the early 90s imo.

These insane virtuosos could've stopped at Surfing With The Alien and Passion and Warfare and that would've been meaningful enough imo. Have you released much meaningful stuff since the 90s? Serious question.

Touched a nerve there.
Been sitting here for about 10 minutes trying to think of "modern" artists that spanned a career writing hits on a guitar. Clapton, McCartney, EVH, ... I'm struggling to think who made hits that reached a lot of people their entire career. I'm not sure it can still be done in the non guitar-centric era we live in.

Cool, they didn't reach me tho.

I checked their site for tour dates the other day ...... I didn't see anything but European dates so far ...

I saw Steve when he was on the Zappa plays Zappa Tour ... shit .. almost 20 years ago ... I've never seen Joe ....

I've been fortunate enough to see Joe and Vai several times in various iterations: Solo, G3, BEAT, etc.

Really great concerts.

I have been a huge fan of them since I can remember. My dad has the Alien Love Secrets VHS.

I remember being very little and thinking it was some weird adult film.

I put it in when no one else was home out of curiosity and it changed my musical life.

That being said, I didn't get a jump of joy for this for whatever reason.

They need someone to write interesting songs to create a context for their lead skills.

I was in a band with a lead guitarist (I played rhythm and sang), who could play just about anything, and create amazing original solos...but he couldn't write songs to save his life.

I wrote a few songs, some with our bass player, that he rejected. Things weren't going well with his originals, so we had a band meeting. He told us (rest of the band)) that he was the band leader, and wanted to be the only songwriter, and even wanted to change the band name to use his name. We all quit on the spot, and formed another band, and found another lead player (good lead guitarists were plentiful) and did better, and had a few originals in our set that we all enjoyed.

THese guys are great players but for some reason I just can't get excited about their new music.
