Stomp Boxes or Rack Effect Units?

I was looking hard at the Eventide Modfactor and Timefactor but was reading up how some guitarist are using the Lexicon MX400 to get great delays, chorus, flange, verb, instead of more expensive stomp boxes. Since two Eventides would set me back about $800, I'd thought before I pull the trigger I'd ask the forum.

Now if one DID go with a rack processor, what do you gain and what do you lose?

Can you use an expression pedal with something like the MX400? What about modulation and real time control?

Any thoughts would be great!

I'm not a rack unit kinda guy either. Too much to haul around. But there are plenty guys here who swear by them.

I have the eventides and you know while I like them I'm not totally crazy about them. So far, I can't quite finds sounds that make me go WOW! But I am still monkeying with them. Definitely a stomp box kind of guy, but that could change one day.

I don't think you have to choose one or the other. I've always been happier with modulation effects and reverbs and delays from rack units, and OD/Dist from pedals. They each have their strengths and weaknesses.

couldn't agree more!!!

I use both. I think they offer the best of both worlds. I love certain things about my rack stuff..and certain things about my pedals!! :)

I'm sure a lot of rack units may sound better. And who knows, eventually I might convert. But... I look at that photo of fuzzyguitars and see all those units, lights and buttons and get overwhelmed. Too much for me.

But, aren't you ever tempted to just fidget around with buttons all day long? That's the problem I think.

Nope but if you come up with a sound in your head and want to keep it just program a button and you have one more added to your arsenal.
