I have been playing super slinky 9's for a long time, but recently got a guitar equipped with 10s, a PRS DGT. The guitar plays amazing and sounds great. The 10s on it, I don't know what brand they are, but play and sound great.

I like strings that I could best describe as buoyant, yet firm. I ordered a Kiesel a while back with 9's and it came with elixirs, I like those. Anyone play elixirs in 10 gauge, similar to the 9s? I play the super slinky 9s, and tried the 10s a while back and I don't know if I got a bad or strange set but they were horrible.

Any guys here go from 9s to 10s? what strings do you use? do you tune down a half step?

thanks!!

Different brands/variants are more taught than others, imho. Ernie Balls are really slinky, go figure. Daddarios are tight. GHS are kinda in the middle, but still slinky. DR Tight Fits are tight (again, go figure). DR Blues are more elastic. I've been using the new Daddario NYXLs. I like them a lot. The sound really good and last a long time. A use 11-52 in Eb on a 25" scale.

Been a D'Addario 10's user for a LONG time. Switched from 9's quite a while ago.
Went down to Eb and changed to 10's at the same time...

Recently tried some Elixir 10's. I'm liking them.
Both on double locking AND non-locking guitars. Standard tuning and Eb, both on SG's and 25" scale guitars.
I've considered going up to 11's here and there, but have never done it.

Anyway, enjoying the Elixir 10's these days.

Are the scales different on your guitars?

24.75, 25, and 25.5, Les Paul, PRS DGT, and Kiesel Aries

The difference between 9s and 10s isn't much from what I've experienced. I used a lot of 11-54 in standard recently and that's a big difference. I like 10-52 on 24.75" scale or GHS 10.5s. I think for 25.5" I'd want 9-46. I have one 25.5" guitar right now and I don't know what's on there.

I can't really tell much difference on the high side until 11s, but that might just be because I used the 11-54s for months and everything feels really light now. There is definitely a huge difference on the low strings. I need at least a 48 on the low E or it is just too loose for me (at 24.75 at least). Brand hasn't really made much difference to me. I've used EB, GHS, and Daddario mostly.

I really wish there were cheaper options for custom sets.

I used 11-49 D'addario. In Drop C on a 25.5" scale.

I used GHS for years and years but I really like the D'addarios I am using now. For me it is all about tension. I have used 9's all the way up to 12's on a 6 string in various tunings and that is where I ended up.

There are tension calculators online that will provide your tension so you can estimate if you are thinking about changing.

That is interesting. I have never noticed THAT much difference between brands using the same gauges.

I have a guitar that I am always fighting with because it is very stiff, even using 9-42. I always use Daddario these days. Maybe I will try an EB set on it. I usually dont like that they die quickly, but maybe they would help the stiff feel in this case.

I'm going the other way and switching from regular 10s to regular 9s for Strats and 9.5s for Les Paul/335 (standard tuning). Maybe try 10s on your 24.75 scale guitars and 9.5s on your 25.5 scale?

i put 9's on my rg and 10's on my ltd v's - which are neck thru with thicker necks. i tune all my guitars to e flat.
i just use d'iaddario strings

The NYXL Daddarios I've been using seem a little slinkier than the regular XLs. They're a bit pricy, but they last longer and sound better, imho. I used the regular XLs for years. I moved over a long time ago from EB Slinkies.

Ran the Daddario XL for years (previously EB Super Slinky) but lately preferring the Elixir 10s to cut down on changes.
