Howdy . I play left handed . I have an older G & L legacy which I like . I have been considering getting a new guitar . The problem is that most companies make their left handed models as an after thought , and usually do the bottom of the line models .

So I have found that the signature models at least are fairly well done and thought that the ones that make left handed versions might be ok . 3 guitars I have looked at are the Joes satriani ( Ibanez ) the Steve Vai ( Ibanez Jem ) and the John Pertucci ( Musicman 6 and family reserve 6 ) Unfortunately being a left handed player there are not too much models to try .

Has any body played the above guitars and how do they compare to the Suhr guitars. I understand this might be a loaded question since this is the Suhr forums . Also do Suhr make left handed models ?

I want a guitar that sounds good for both rock and also in a church environment .

Thankyou

Suhr doesn't make any entry level guitars. All the left handers they make are as high end as their right handed models. I have played and or owned all the guitars you mentioned and Suhr would offer the highest quality of the mall. I still own some nice Ibanezes that play excellently but none of them sound as full as a Suhr standard or Suhr Modern.

Thanks man ...good to know .I did talk to some people that sell Suhr's ( not many in Canada ) And they all say they are are top notch . The only propblem for me is I can't try any , because there are none close by ,and even if there were ,I play lefty :} The other thing is it is hard to know what to pick . There are so many options . Wood, neck radius , pickups . I just don't know where to begin .I also don't think I could spend 5k on a guitar. And it seems to me each custom will be around that much .I would go for a pro but I don't think you can have a locking trem on those

Hi Llewzaher, Andy from diffusion-audio here. We're an authorized Suhr dealer here in Canada and we have several (4) left handed Suhr Pros in stock, a Classic S and a Standard

The Pro series are a great deal, built to the same standards as the custom orders and the only upcharge for lefthanded is the case (which is the same G&G case supplied with a custom guitar instead of the slightly less expensive molded case that comes with a righty Pro).

Custom guitars start around $2400cad. I'd be glad to help you narrow down all the options or if you would like to try one of the guitars above, can offer an evaluation period where we'd offer a full refund less shipping if you're not happy...or apply the whole amount against a custom order to your specs.

Hi Llewzaher, the fourth pic is a L-H Suhr Pro Series S5 with locking trem!!!! So yes, they do make 'em and we have one in Canada!!!

Ok i did some specs on your site . The big thing I don't understand is all of the neck measurments . And fret size . I read some people on the Suhr forums compl;aining about the neck size and frets not what they expected and have trouble playing etc...

I am a little concerned over that as I do not know what is a good size to get etc.. I have a G & L US legacy special , with a maple neck and the frets are ok for me . I also have a line6 Left hand with rosewood neck and the frets and the width seem smaller .I am not sure of radius or anything ..here are some pics of my 2 guitars I have now. The black sunburst is the L6 , the other is the Legacy . The line 6 basically collects dust . The Legacy I play often .

the frets seems alot smoother and bigger on the G&L . they are a little wider as well . I am not sure what the measurments are . I think the frets are stainless steel on the Legacy . Really smooth etc..

So how big are Jumbo frets compared to mine etc..?

I'm going to ask and find out as I'm not an expert on left handed fret wire

Andy

hello fellow lefty! the frets on your g and l look to be jumbo to me in these pics. the same as my ibanez.

Just by eye, the Suhr jumbos aren't as wide as the G&L but they're way bigger than the line 6

Andy

thx guys , so it looks like I should be ok with jumbos .

Now the other issue is neck radius and thickness , and would fret width be how far apart they are ? In my Lgacy I notice that the frets are farther apart than the L 6 . Can't say I prefer one or the other , just different to play I guess .

Is radius the back of the neck ? and what would be a standar radius measurment ?

sorry for all the questions

The distance between fret centres and in fact, the total length from bridge to nut is called the scale. The two most common scale lengths are 25 1/2" and 24 7/8", the former associated with Fender and the latter with Gibson. An intermediate scale, 25" has been popularized in particular by PRS.

Scale length affects tone, bendability/tension and other factors but many players can easily change over from one to another sometimes with a short time to get used to the change, while others only play a certain scale.

The radius is actually the fretboard side's profile and ranges from completely flat like a classical guitar to a 50's Fender with a 7.5" radius. Modern shred players often prefer a 16" radius or a 10-14" compound radius. A compound radius is when the fretboard gets flatter as one goes further up the neck. This is great for bending/vibrato beyond a whole tone on the high frets

The neck shape is the profile of the back of the neck, parameters include the width at the nut, the neck's thickness at different fret areas and the shape of the neck if one were to cut a cross section. Common shapes are a rounded C shape, a D shape with a flatter center strip or a slight V (<)

Searching google and various forums will give you far more detailed answers as the above is the nickel tour. You then be able to measure and compare your guitars as well as other you try in order to see what options best suit your style.

*Gibson Scale is actually 24.625, not 24.75 as commonly advertised or the 24.875 you suggest.

Just nitpicking :)

Ok it's been 7 months and am still putting of buying a guitar , because I want a Suhr .I am going to have to play around with some Ibanez and Fender left handed guitars to see if I can get a feel for neck sizes etc... Kind of confusing .I don't want to make a mistake because I likely will be paying quite a bit more .

Pick up a used one, if it doesn't pan out, they hold their value well, and you'll get most if not all of your loonie back. I didn't have any dealers here in Michigan either, bit the bullet figuring if I didn't like it, at least I could turn it back around. I was looking hard at a BFR Petrucci before I bought my Modern, in my opinion, the Suhr feels, sounds and responds much better and was a grand cheaper.

yeah just haven't seen many used standards...left handed ... Lots of the S pro series tho

i've owned ibanez prestige, various EBMM's, and now have 2 suhrs... IMO there is no comparison.. the suhrs are several steps above
