Looking at the S3 through S6. I have a few questions. The the non Floyd models stay in tune under heavy trem usage? Can the double humbucker models get Straty tones or am I better off going with the SSH models? What colors do the S3, S4, S5 and S6 come in?

By the way, do the Pro Series Moderns have figured tops?

Jim

Hey Jim,

I think the non-floyd models stay in tune great...but I'm not playing much Van Halen or Vai these days. I'll never go back to Floyd's just based on the ease of string changes without one.

I've got a Pro Series in an HSH configuration and the in-between sounds are fantastic. I've also got a Standard with FL's to compare it to and the split buckers are very close and very straty.

There's lots of colors available, just check out their website. I got mine in Honeyburst with stainless frets and a pearloid pickguard. Here's a pic, although it's not so bright in person.

Nice. I didn't think the Pro Series came with SS frets?

Yup, you can order them with them now, as an upgrade. Mine has SS frets too. The trem is great, very solid and stays in tune very well indeed. And no, the Pro Series Moderns don't have figured tops, they have "soft-touch" matte finishes.

In the HSS ones, how big of a volume drop is there between the bridge bucker and the singles?

Please sell this one ;) too me!!!

I have an S3 and it's the only guitar I've played where I don't want to put in a neck HB, the SCs sound awesome, and there's no volume drop of any significance.

I think ( I may be wrong) that they are all routed HSH under the pickguard, so if you got a HSS and decided you wanted to go HH or HSH it'd just be the case of ordering a new pickguard from suhr and fitting it - easy.

Mine's faded denim

Awesome. How well does the trem stay in tune?

Having owned a couple of S3's, I can tell you that they stay in tune great with moderate trem usage if you have the nut and saddles lubed and if you stretch the strings properly. If you're an unbridled divebomber and whammy wanker, get a Floyd, as the Gotoh 510 is not really a trem to go too crazy on.

Had no idea you could get the Pro Series with Mahogany body/maple cap with mahogany neck/rosewood fingerboard. Just saw one on Ebay. I have a Suhr Standard with basswood/maple but I really   need the mahogany.

Same as the Suhr, Basswood/maple. But a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard.

Hey JSKI you mentioned the H-S-H is still Stratty when the buckers are split- does the full neck humbucker give you some real warm almost semi hollow tones up there ?

That's one of my favorite things about H-S-H is how you can go from one extreme to the other, also which humbuckers(model) are giving you the nice split tones?

The H-S-H configuration is definitely the most versatile setup I've seen or heard. You can add a push-pull pot to split the neck HB or both HB's to get even more single-coil sounds, like on the GG Signature. The 2nd position would be outside coil of the neck HB with the middle and the 4th position would be the inside coil of the bridge HB with the middle. We can have the middle position on the 5-way wiring to be the middle pickup or get the two outside coils of the HB's. I prefer the sound of the two outside coils. The neck HB split, although not an authentic Strat single-coil sound, still sounds surprisingly good and is very usable. We like the SSV or the Aldrich in the neck or any of the SS (Single-Screw) HB's for the bridge position. The SS's sound a little Strattier than the DS (Double-Screw) versions.
