Suhr Riot with an old Marshall JCM 800?

I'm just listening again to Mark Day's demo of the Suhr Riot dirt box. It sounds really good, one of the best I've heard, and I usually prefer only amp distortion.

I'm just wondering how it would sound in front of an old stock Marshall JCM 800 50 watt amp head? On both the Low input and High input, but with the amp set really clean?

The Riot does its best work in front of clean tube amps, IMO. Sounded killer on the clean chan of my Herbert. Never did try it on any of my other amps though, and I've since sold it off. One of the best distortion pedals out there. Not very useful as an overdrive compared to others that are meant as OD's, but it can still be fun to kick on for some extra lead "gunk".

Well in that case I guess it would work well then?

I prefer my JCM 800 set really clean, it sounds great like that. I use the Low input rather than the High input. For a little bit of grit, I just switch to the bridge pickup and dig into the strings really hard. It helps having the master volume set fairly high, when I can.
It's the 2204 model, no effects loop.

But I need more gain so it can dovetail with my high gain MarkIV. And I don't want to mod the circuit at all.
I tried an EQ pedal today as a clean boost, and it did work okay. I got a good sound, but it sounds too clean compared to the cranked lead channel of my MarkIV, particularly when I ran both amps at once. I need a bit more fire & heat to give it that "rippling" texture.

If you run clean through the low input anyway then I'd say it'll work very well! It's a fantastic pedal, but it's usage is limited through distorted channels. I do recall now trying it through some of my Mesa's, and the results were the same...great on clean channels, not very useful on the gain channels.

I bet the Riot would have sounded killer through my 1987 model JCM 800. Let me know how you make out!

I used a riot in the LDR setting of a Vintage Modern and it worked great.i havent tried it with my Chupa tho.

Thanks man. Yeah I actually bought my JCM 800 on the basis of how it sounded clean!
It's only a single channel amp- but has a Low and High input. The High input has more gain I think, well more sensitive I guess.
But I think someone messed around with the High input before I bought it, so unfortunately I don't think it's stock. But the Low input is fine.

I've been meaning to make some clips for ages, but been busy with work and I've had a really hard time trying to blend my amps together. It's been frustrating me a lot. I think my MarkIV is one selfish bitch! hahaha It sounds great on its own, the Marshall sounds great on its own, but when both are cranked and raging they just don't seem to get along so far. At first it was a phase issue but I fixed that. I dunno it's hard to explain. But I am hoping even more now that the Riot will help me out.

i think it'll sound good =0

one of my favourite sounds/pedal bases is a late 70s JMP into the low output --> greenback cab , with various pedals - absolutely smoked

i actually just use a pedalboard into a clean amp for everything these days, prefer the flexibility and tones i get out of it

my main rig is a modded blackstar HT dual into a hiwatt custom 100 - - two channel tube based pedal - i can't seem to find an amp that i like as much as that setup -

You may want to think about a Wampler Plextortion. The nice thing about the plextortion is it has seperate bass/mid/treble controls. You can really tailor it to the amp. I mostly use the high input of my 800. But recently we started doing some modern stuff. Didn't really want to run a 2 amp setup or buy another amp so I bought a Wampler recstortion. Very flexible and works great. Right now I use a crunchbox for miab sounds just so I don't have to switch back and forth in the middle of a set, but the rectortion is so good, I'm thinking of getting the plextortion just for a different flavor. Then I can unload the crunchbox which is very good too.

Hey guys, sorry I ended up getting another dirt pedal than the Riot. I'm currently getting my guitar fixed up and they had their own custom-built dirt box that is intended to sound like a cranked valve amp, and can also be used as a clean-boost. I had a look at it and it was perfect, and also it was a local product which I like to support whenever I can. It was pretty much the Fremantle version of Suhr! They makes really nice amps too.
It works really well with the JCM 800 too. Really warm and cleans up nicely when rolling back the guitar's volume knob. Crunches really well.
When I get a chance I will do clips of it.

I still highly recommend the Riot though. If the Riot was in stock I would have bought that immediately!
