Just saying, I love the DiMarzio Super Distortion in my Charvel. I was a little nervous having to mod the cavity a bit, but everytime I play it I'm reminded it was worth the effort - the JB simply wasn't working. I'm sure some will chime in and recommend their fav's with the promod's but heh, I had the extra Super D. already at hand...

Sounds GREAT, however, those were NOT Rig Talk approved riffs. Take a time out to think about your FAIL, and come back with the right stuff...

;)

What do you feel is better about the Super D over the stock pickup? I'm on the fence about this change

Thanks JT, jmgman!

LMAO! Didn't notice the wink at first, was like "what the? That's the best I can do, tough crowd!"

projectx - Tone Zone or the JB, fairly popular pickups, at least commonly respected enough for Charvel to go with them and feel they'll make the "masses" happy. Of those two, I much prefer the TZ, but when it comes to the TZ vs the Super Distortion, I dunno, the Super just jives with my amps better I guess. Bottom line, personal pref with pickups can be an ugly topic, lol! Really, if you're liking what you hear with the TZ, leave it be! I'm about to nab another San Dimas (a nice looking used wildcard SSH surfaced locally) and the first thing I'm doing is replacing its JB with a......wait for it......TZ, lol (I have an extra one). Then I'll be covered with two pretty cool and different sounding bridge tones with my promods, maybe one sounds better for rhythms, the other for leads, and so on.

Got ya bro. I do like the Tone Zone in my So Cal so maybe I'll leave it as is.

I really want to try an alnico II mag first in my JB to see what effect that has but after that, I am jumping on the SD bandwagon. One question though, you mentioned having to alter the bridge pickup cavity in the san dimas, can you talk more about that? That is what makes me nervous..

Somebody else here (well known tone/clip poster, can't recall who) posted a great sounding TZ/promod clip and stated he loved that "stock" pairing. So yeah, truly is a case of ones particular amps/speakers/mics, etc, that kinda dictates what works. Also (just stating the obvious), depends on what you play - lots of dudes that play solos and lead work love the JB for that but think it sucks for chords/rhythm.

Kapo_Polenton - is your guitar new? I ask because it takes some cojones to yank the pretty stock pickup out of there, grab a hammer and chisel and start chipping away, lol....but honestly, I'll never be mistaken for a handy man and I had no issues making the cavity a little deeper. That plus adding pickup rings (which look great on these guitars regardless) did the trick.

Yeah, fairly new guitar here so not so sure about getting bizzay with the chisels.. simply because if i want to resell it, I might be hurting value if it is altered. That and i am afraid to mess something up!

nice Charvel. Why would you need to modify the cavity going from a JB to an SD? By they way I like both pickups myself. I find a lot of times its just finding the right pickup to match the body wood.

The pickup cavity isn't deep enough for a Dimarzio. I had to do the same when I put a Crunch Lab in mine.

Cool clip BTW
Thanks man! You do a lot of recording, don't you? What would be a good way to double this particular tone now? Maybe just leave the settings as they are and grab a different guitar and play it again? I can repeat/double fairly well but the best approach 'sonically' has always been an issue. Kinda a cheesy riff, but I could see doubling it up, adding some more ideas (obviously) and then play leads over it.

I do some yeah, I like using the same guitar as I feel I play differantly if I use a differant one. I would just play it again/double it with tweaked amp settings, just experiment and see how it comes out.

For example I like to quad track rhythm guitars, 2 with exaggerated mids and 2 with cut back mids and treble. But it is all personal and depends on the amp etc.

Hey, thanks. I'll try it with the opposite mids/treble approch and just use the same guitar.
