What's a good relatively cheap midi controller to write drums on Superior Drummer on my laptop? I'm a little leery of the USB ones as I've had latency issues using USB midi interfaces.

Check out the Akai line up. I ended up getting an MPK49 (full on 49 key keyboard controller with the MPC drum pads) and it works killer off my Macbook Pro - totally through USB, no latency or the like, perfect. ANYWAY - in my research of finding an appropriate MIDI keyboard controller, I came to realize there's a lot of respect for the Akai product in the sense of drum pads, beat pads, and controllers. FWIW, I run my SD2.0 through Reaper and the MPK49. It's still a fairly new acquisition, so I can't say I'm experienced at it at all quite yet - but I've found it to be intuitive, and thus far, very responsive and solid feeling. I'd imagine their drum-software specific controllers are the same, and they are renowned for their MPC systems.

Hope this helps.

Right on, thanks Mo! At the forefront right now is the Akai lpd8, looks like it's got exactly what I need with not too much more!

What DAW are you using? I typically use hyper-draw/note editor in Logic Pro, and forget the whole midi controller thing. It probably helps that I'm half drummer too. But if I need to add some "extra-humanzed" parts, I'll just use a (piano)keyboard to record passages.

Aside from that, it's sometimes useful to automate slight tempo variations throughout the song. It adds a little human element.

Hey, guys, I usually just write the midi file note by note, I've done about 6 songs this way and they turn out great but I want to get some base parts down quickly and then add fills, accents and humanization in afterwards. I did have a set of Roland TD9ks' which were great but I am not a full on drummer, I could do all the parts, it just took alot longer because drummer is not my natural position :)

Sweet. Well, the LPD8 should do the trick... Good Luck!
