OK...I am a NOOB to this....

I just ordered a used 2006 VH4 that has 6l6's in it. While thinking I personally would prefer EL34's in it, the dealer stated that he would throw a set of Ruby EL34 tubes in it before he shipped it to me and would also include the stock 6l6's as part of the deal.

Is it just that easy to switch between a quartet set of tubes in a VH4 amp without biasing or adjusting anything? I also asked the dealer if it was just that easy and he said, "yes it is just that simple, no adjustments nothing". He stated that just as long that you are using a matched quartet set "of high quality", there is nothing to do other than the swap of the tubes. Is this true?

:gethim:

It's not quite that easy. You also need to flip a switch next to the tubes from the 6L6 setting to the EL34 setting. Additionally, you'd also need to adjust the bias using the bias trimpot on the circuit board. It's easy to adjust, especially if you're using something like a Weber bias rite to measure the tubes. The harder part is removing the amp from the chassis to get to the trimpot. Not complicated, but heavy!

You could just replace the tubes and flip the switch to the EL34 setting without biasing it, but you'll get a better result if you set the bias as well.

BTW if you like EL34s those Rubys do sound good, but the set I tried only lasted a few months. For 6L6s try the Rubys also. They sound good!

guitarobert,

I really appreciate your help!
