T/D module question

I just picked up a MOD 50 combo w/reverb after waiting about 3 months for one to arrive at my local dealer. Needless to say, I am blown away. I haven't played many hi-end amps, but it is miles above the others I have tried (a Vox AC15, a Fender HRDX and a Bogner Duende were my favorites). I've had the chance to take it to one band rehearsal session, and it did amazingly well.

I got the VX and SL2 mods to start off with, and like them both a lot. However, I just picked up a T/D module and have one question. The D channel sounds great, but the T channel seems to be remarkably low volume. I have to crank the channel volume up to about 3 o'clock to get it to any decent volume, whereas I might be running my D channel at 11 o'clock or so. Even then, the T channel sounds a bit weak.

I've never owned a Tweed amp, so I have no idea what they are supposed to sound like. I was assuming it would be a bit thinner and more vintage sounding than the Deluxe, but I wanted to check. Is this normal? I was wondering if I might have a defective module or something.

Yes, that does seem to be standard operating procedure. Bassman is somewhat the same way. Don't worry, just run that Channel A master real high like we do on the T/D and Bassman. Then you can set your other levels to match. You also may want to try swapping pre amp tubes around too, especially if the T side sounds weak. Give it a shot.

Another thing to consider is where the gain is set. I had a problem with the volume on both the VX and BMAN channel A at first b/c my natural inclination is to roll the gain all the way back. I discovered once I moved it up to about 11-12 o'clock it really filled out the sound. I tend to set my cleans with a little hair anyway and either roll it off with the guitar volume knob or just split the coil.

I agree 100% there. One thing I have noticed, that would be good for the T/D, VX, and COD is to get 5751's and put them in V1. Those tubes are about 70% of the gain of a normal 12ax7, but they are killer tubes. That allowed me to run my DLX and COD a bit higher on the gain, which really filled out the sound, but raised the headroom of the module to keep me from getting my clean tones too dirty.

Works great for me!! It would be very interesting to hear a 5751 in the VX for sure!

Thanks for all the good advice. This place is a great resource.

It's also my natural tendency to have the gain low. I've turned the gain up and I think I've got it sounding better. I've also changed to running the Master at 1 or 2 o'clock (before I had it around 9 o'clock) and that seems to improve the sound quite a bit.

Haven't thought about changing the tubes yet... The possibilities on this thing (the Mod 50) are unbelievable!

They are honestly! I have a drawer full of tubes. It is amazing how different all the tubes make the modules sound. I love the flexibility of the amp 100%. It responds well to everything...preamp tube changes, power amp tube changes, pickup changes, speaker changes... I'm so impressed with the amps every day I jam!
