T/D module vs the real deal?

Has anyone compared the T/T, D/D and the T/D to a real Twin or Deluxe. If so how did it compare. Does the eq react the same on the modules as the Fender amps it was inspired by? Say you have a twin with the bass, mids and treble at 12:00. Will the module be pretty close at these settings?

Hope this makes sense.

Billy

I don't want to sound like a dick, but whether the knobs are in the same spot is irrelevant.

The taper of pots on any given amp can change from year to year given the variances in tolerance and such.

IMO, yes, it sounds like the real deal.

In practice, will the knobs line up the same way? No way in hell.

dial with your ears, not your eyes.

I'm asking because my T/D doesn't sound as good as my old BF Twin. It's close but not quite there. I'm either going to go with a T/T or a D/D. From what I've read on here the T/T and the D/D sound a little better than the T/D. Right now I have channel A dialed in with these settings. These settings seem to wok the best for my rig. I'm using a G&L ASAT Special.

Gain - 2:00
Master - full
Bass - 10:00
Mids - 10:00
Treble - 9:00 - off
BB & TB - off

Definitely get a T/T or D/D. Never really cared for the T/D compared to the T/T or D/D. They do a much better job of each respective tone...vs the T/D. I sold my T/D long ago for a D/D and T/T...and am much happier. I just personally don't use the T/T that much...so hence the reason why I'm selling it. My XMAN and DLX modules are my personal go - to modules.

The T/T module I have ....is unreal...in how it sounds like a Twin. Better IMHO.

Billy:

I really think the module gets surprisingly close. I listened to a BF Fender a few weeks ago
and thought "I could get that" on my rig.

However, you have to put it in perspective:

Blackface Twin
open back 2x12 combo
vintage speakers - depending on what you got in there
100 watts
Fender power section

Twin module in a Mod 50 head
2x12 extension cabinet (closed or open?)
not blackface speakers - again depends on what you've got in there.
50 watts
Egnater power section

A better comparison might be to run the Twin module into a Twin and compare the two that way. But w/out an fx return or the like, I don't know how you'd do that.

I figure out my problem. I don't like the 5751 in the T/D. I'm a single coil guy and the 5751 was making everything a little lean. I put the 12AX7 back in V1 and there it is

Hell yeah, dude.

You're dead on the money about using your ears. My friend is bringing his BF Twin over tomorrow. I won't be surprised in the T/D in the Mod 50 sounds better.

My buddy brought his HR Deluxe over and I just had a Deville 410 over and the Mod 50 crushed them, with the T/D just sayin :D

  Actually after I retubed it and tweaked it a bit it sounded pretty good, until i fired up the Mod50   then it didn't

I own a BF Deluxe non-reverb and a SFDR...I love the bejesus out of my MOD50 but I was never able to get the same kind of sounds out of the T/D module, which I chalked up to the different cabs (open back single 12" vs the TM212 cab) and speakers (Jensen vs Elite 80s). The sweet spot on my DR, about 3 or 4 volume and just the beginning of some grit, has this incredible musical quality with sweet overtones, the kind that make you want to play stuff just to hear how dynamic it sounds. I ended up selling the T/D and picking up a BMAN which I like a lot better due to its warmth and different EQ. I still haven't figured out how to get that same kind of soul piercing tone out of it that I get from my traditional gear, but that could well be "user error" :) Don't get me wrong, I am absolutely in love with my Eggie gear and it is my primary rig and I can't imagine using anything else. I just think there may be something about pushing the power tubes on my old Fenders that I haven't figured out how to get from my modular gear (yet).

That's how I feel about the clean tones on my T/D module. The VX nails the Vox tones but I have yet to find it with the T/D. The pushed Deluxe tones on the T/D sound great.

It would be an interesting experiment to:

A. Load a Mod 50 with 6V6s

and

C. Route the speaker out to an open back cab, single speaker

And THEN do some side by side tests...

Come over and play my Mod50 w/ Jan Philips 6L6s, my Dual Twin or Dual DLX module, and my Eggie TM212 w/ Weber 12F150 / 12F150T (Jensen C12N type speakers).

And this discussion would end. Speakers and open back make a big difference. I get that Twin / DLX feel with the modular stuff..and the 6L6s...with those speakers. And I'm running the TM212 w/ an open back too. It's not sealed.

I owned a old Twin with V30's. Hands down the best Twin I've ever played. IMO BF Fenders sound great with Celestion speakers. They don't have to have EV, Jensens or JBL's to sound great.

Not disagreeing here...but if you want that "normal / expected" twin tone...JBLs or Jensens are usually the norm.

Just made that comment more as a more apples to apples comparison.

Eric

I've had the best luck running the mids higher on my old Twin. Same goes for the T/D. With the mids higher it's in the ball park.
