I'm particularly interested in the Egnater Elite. I understand that it's a modified CL80 with a tad more and tighter low end. That's cool, but I have no point of reference at all for the CL80. The description on Celestion's site seems pretty cool, but all their descriptions are like that.

What are your opinions and or experiences with the CL80 or Egnater Elite? I'm interested in picking on up and paring with a V30 in a 2x12. How does the CL80 compare to the V30? Are the two a good combination? I like smooth, which seems one of the descriptions of the CL80, but I don't want to go too smooth. The Renegade combo comes with this speaker pairing, which I haven't really had the pleasure to sit with at healthy volumes. It seems like it might be a good combination though...the CL80s for smooth and the V30 to keep some aggression. But I could be completely wrong.

So what are opinions and/or experiences of the CL80, the Egnator Elite, or the combination of V30s and one of those two?

Hi, I have a TM212 cab with 2 Elite 80's and I have a Mesa Lonestar cab with 2 V30's, and being a Mesa fan I'm quite familiar with Black Shadow MC90's. I find both V30s and Elite 80s are smoother than the MC90's. I prefer the sound of my Lonestar Cab with the V30's however, over the TM212 with the Elite 80's. I would choose the V30's over the Elite 80's any day, but if you are looking for a combination, I think the 80's are a good choice.

Now, what I really want to try is a G12K-100 and an EVM-12L

CL-80s are my favorite speaker thus far. I wrote about them a while back in one thread. So balanced and warm. Never spikey or harsh, and they have such a good sound without being too dark either. Ive only played about 6 speakers out there but so far my favorite. I wish my bogner 2X12 had both CL-80s instead of just one..:/

These Are my Reference Speakers.... I use them with my Cameron CCV, and My Diezel HERBERT.

I also have them in a Egg TM212 Cab with a Renegade head for a bedroom amp, and couldn't love it more.

These are smooth on the top, Rich and warm in the mids... And Have BODAICOUS BOTTOM END!!!

Love Em!

REALLY>? What are they in? A 4X12 or 2X12 with your herbert. Like what kind of cabinet? Ive been tempted to do this.

cl80 is my favorite speaker, it records really well too....

Thanks guys. They really sound like something I would like. Especially a smooth top end.

What about the mids? Would you say low mids or high mids are more present? Or balanced where neither dominate?

its a very balanced speaker, smooth highs , tight bass.... very articulate...they move nice air to! they work well everything ive thrown at em amp wise, awsome for loud volumes, they stay tight and smooth.. but still move air!

my fav!

Good thread. Those of you that have played the Elite 80's... Is there any difference at all between the Elite and CL 80's, or is it just the name?

They are one of the better of the new celestions. They seem to really make a difference in a 1x12 or 2x12. I haven't loaded a full 4x12 with them. They have a really clear and full sound (for a celestion). They are not "too smooth" like a blanket over a speaker thing, they just don't have the harshness on the top end like a g12t75.

They are perfect for marshall style combo amps, they are a huge improvement over a v30 or g12t75 that you will see in most of them.

I didn't know what an elite 80 was but did a quick google search. Scroll down to Bruce Egnater's post.

The jist of it is, they are pretty much the same.

Dude, thanks for posting that link. That was very informative. I appreciate my Elite 80's more now!

Rob,

I have them in a MILLS AFTERBURNER 4X12 AND A CAMERON 4X12 CAB

And in the Egnater TM 2X12 cab in the form of Elite 80's as well!

I am a big fan of CL80's. They are a nice neutral celestion speaker that work well with alot of amps. I have only used them in 212s or 112s. I do have a 112 with a V30 and a 112 with a CL80 and the two cabs mixed well together.

The CL80 has a solid bass, nice midrange and nice highs. Its pretty balanced over the spectrum and doesn't impart too much of its character on the tone. The V30 by comparison has a midrange peak and does impart its sonic character on the tone. The chief complaint I see on the CL80's is that they are kind of bland, which I can see. If you are coming from a Greenback or V30 and used to the speaker really coloring the tone, than the CL80 may be a good or bad shock.

The CL80 and Mesa MC90 were derived from the G12-80 in the 80's. The MC90 is said to be closer to the G12-80.

Im thinking about loading my RL cab X pattern with CL-80s and hempcones..
Are they better FL or RL? Anyone?

Thank guys.

The only way I'll know is to pick one up. I've got a deal on a new Elite out of a Egnater cabinet. So I think I'll grab it and see. It'll be mixed with a V30. Several have said they mix well together, so I'm going to give it a go.

This is also a CL-80 in a bogner ported 1X12. Playing through a diezel

Sounds pretty good to me. Cool vid too. :)

Hey, this is a bit off-topic, but I'm sure you guys can answer. I've been playing my TM212x with Elite 80's with the sealed back for about a year. I just took the back vent panel off and I'm really liking the sound. I think, at low volumes a sealed cab sounds choked. You need more power to make it sound good sealed.

So, my question is: The classic Marshall 1960 4x12 cabs, are they sealed or ported? What about the oversized Mesa 4x12s?
