Tell Me About Fortin Amps

I know of Fortin and have a little experience, but want to know more. At one time, I considered buying a Bones, but elected to get a Bogner XTC 20th for that money. When it was announced that Mike Fortin would be working with Randall, I was intrigued but not excited. It sounded like this amazing amp guru was financially forced to sell-out. Because they were made in China, I pretty much wrote them off. However, on a recent trip to a music store, I had nothing to demo guitars through except Fender, Peavey and Randall amps, so I chose the Thrasher.

Man the Thrasher was impressive from the moment I struck the first note. It had great tone and definition, and the clean channel was like icing on the cake. What a fantastic clean channel. It was like a modern, hi-fi Fender clean or something with kind of a bouncy feel and just really fun to play with. I moved over to the RD45 and it too was an awesome little amp with a nice clean channel. Although the RD45 is a nice value, the Thrasher is what stuck in my mind.

Unfortunately, with a $1700 price tag, I wasn't about to spend that much on a Chinese made amp. I know, I know, but I've had my experience with Chinese manufacturing and I don't care what they say about IPhones, etc..., I'm always going to be stuck on the big three (USA, Europe, Japan). The only exception I have made thus far has been Blackstar amps which have proven to be an exception to my rule.

In any case, I once played a Fortin modded Marshall JCM800 several years ago. I didn't know anything about Fortin back then so it wasn't a big deal to me. I wasn't "blown away," but I do remember thinking it was a great sound. All that I can remember is that it was a more modern sound with something different about the low mids and a lot more gain. Still, the memory stuck with me enough to check in on the Fortin website a couple of years later.

To make a long story short, I'm probably never going to drop $4000 on a Fortin amp or $1700 on a Randall/Fortin, but I would like to know more about the man and his art. Why are his amps so expensive? There are a lot of great amp-modders out there these days, so what makes Fortin so respectable? Is it because he caters to the high-gain metal crowd? Does he still make and sell his own amps and do mods?

Who's Fortin?

Nah just kidding. I've had two of his amps andet me tell you that the quality in craftsmanship and tone is spectacular. Not a bad thing to say about nothing he does.

Wish I would of kept both of these amps. I'm stupid sometimes.

Build quality on his amps is spectacular
His reputation varies from forum to forum
I can see why people would love his amps, but the tone is just not my thing

I had a rd50 & now a modded VM
Fortin really has his sound going on. In a world of Marshall & Mesa based tones, Fortin imo has created something unique. The attack and tightness is unparalleled for my experiences; the thunder lows are scary the first time you play it. That being said, it took me months to get the dials and signal chain (OD pedal & speakers). I dial every other amp in minutes. I think this complexity can make some less than thrilled; once I found the right chain it is amp love.

Wow you're the first person I see that owned both Fortins and Peters amp.

How do they compare? Can you get Fortin tones with a Peter and vice/versa? Which one is more brutal?

Thanks

Fortin is more aggressive IMO (I have 2 fortin modded amps and a chimera/hyra/halo) but both are incredible in their own way.

I have a Fortin Cali modded jcm800bass 100 watter. It's probably the best sounding and feeling amp I own out of a few dozen. (for my tones and style) .. I do love many other amps, but I'd pursue more of his stuff in a heartbeat. Eric

Well, aggressiveness wise, to me, the Peters is the winner here. The Fortin is very aggressive also but is more polished and the low end is suuuuper tight, no give. While the Peters has a slightly looser low end but you can dig in the strings better, a more raw tone that when you dig in as hard as you can it gets you the most aggressive tone you want. You decide what comes out of the speakers.

It really comes down to preferences, the cleans are great on both but the Halo clean of the Peters is a really special channel, it has a feel all it`s own that i never felt on another amp.

In the end i sold the two channel and got a 3 channel and i`m real happy with it.

I didn't find the bones that I played aggressive at all. Gain on tap for miles, but the cotton-like feel/tone didn't strike my fancies.

I feel as though Mike's amplifiers are better suited to soloist musicians who need singing/searing tone. As far as aggression is concerned there are other options.

Mike is a down to earth guy and we try to keep in touch. Highly recommend him.

As far as his reputation? The dude is the lead designer for randall, runs a full time business, and used to do the amplifier stuff on the side on top of it all while managing a family. Some people can't cut him slack.

Before you go talking about cutting him some slack, let's be clear that my thread has nothing at all to do with bashing the guy. In fact, far from it. Because I have been rather impressed with what I have actually played thus far, I'm curious to know more. There are always people who come along and start running with stuff like this, and next thing you know, I've become a Fortin basher. To be honest, if his amps were in the $1500-2500 range, it's likely that I might purchase one. They're just too out of reach for me. As much as I like the Thrasher, it's too bulky, pricey, and too much amp for me. The Diavlo is also great, but I really like best what I heard from the Thrasher. Too bad there's not a smaller, 50w version.

Cool, thanks for the info to both you and Laura. I always wanted to get a Peters GNL. Love the clips that Firejack did. I was about to pull the trigger on one. And then I got a chance to buy a Natas. So I went with the Fortin instead. I'll get a Peters later on.

Thanks

How much does the Natas go for? I've been looking for one but it's not an easy find.

I didn't come along to piss in your corn flakes. I've played one of his amplifiers and I have spoken to him on multiple occasions. You wanted to know about the amp line so you got it.

They are hard to find now, they pop up once in a while on the classifieds here but I dont think he builds anymore under the Fortin name. I could be wrong though.

Great guy, fantastic player also ;)
My experiences with Mike have been absolutely top notch. I would love to own one of his namesake heads, I think they are much more versitile than they are given credit for. Just listen to big wreck's earlier stuff. Its a Bones that was not set for full aggressive tones, and it sounds fantastic. Here on RT, we tend to hear them dialed in for similar tones, which gives us an impression that they all sound that way, when I dont think that is the case at all. Yes, Mike went after tones that seem to be a logical move forward to the aggressive side of things, but I think they are capable of much more than just that. I've dealt with quite a few amp modders over the years, and Mike was the first guy that I really felt could build anything I could dream up, it was just a matter of conveying what I heard in my head accurately to him.
My JMP that he built for me is by far the most versitile amp I own, and responds beautifully to any guitar I plug into it.
Single coils, P90's, or blower pups, the character of each one comes through and stands on its own. No small feat for any amp to pull off.
All the coolest tones you've heard over the years he has studied and knows exactly how to obtain them.
I have some heads I would love to send him for some magic, but I know how busy he is, and I'm not gonna bother him at the moment
